I don't think you understand. What I meant was that no members of the Church have the time to learn the comprehensive history of the LDS Church. There's too much material. It would be the equivalent of a perpetual graduate degree.

Ok. So what do you suggest a lay member be learning? Should it be the PAT answers that are talked about every week? Go to church, read your scriptures, say your prayers? Whatever floats their boat doesn't help someone get into heaven. Surely they need some direction from the Prophet as to what is the most important things to learn that can earn them a first class ticket to the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom. After all, isn't that what a prophet is for? To provide guidance that helps his followers navigate this thing called life?

Maklelan, when the lack of knowledge on this issue is as pervasive as it has been, the fault does not lie entirely at the feet of the members. At the very least, the church shares responsibility for not making the information more readily available resulting in so many members being misinformed.

Removing the death oaths in the 90's?

Yes. That, and getting rid of the preacher.

I think that we need to call a spade a spade and recognize that the Church has screwed up. The point is, they are trying to fix it now. Let us at least give credit where credit is due.

Frankly, for most people, myself included, members will continue attending Church, not because of Joseph's polygamy, but because of how going to Church ultimate makes them feel. The reason we go to Church is to feel better about ourselves, about God, and to kind of regroup for where life takes us the following week.

ETA---And yes, the argument can be made that this can happen in ANY church. The point is, for those of us who have grown up in the LDS Church, and have strong ties to family and community within the LDS Church, this will still be the ultimate reason we will stay.

I think that there can be a lot said for how Church can be approached going forward based on this new information. As I stated in another thread, I think that the Church can be made to work for you rather than the other way around.

Here's the problem with that.
It's the Church that needs to call a spade a spade and admit that it screwed up. Instead of using measly PR speak like "to get ahead of the curve".

The point is, they are trying to fix it now. Let us at least give credit where credit is due.

There's no credit due. They should have done this a long time ago. This is only happening because the Church has no other option, not because the top 15 suddenly got a conscience and decided to proactively come clean because they thought it was the right thing to do.

I do not disagree with this sentiment and the Church can be a very safe and constructive place for people for more reasons than simple religion.
That said, with the Book of Mormon, we are not dealing with a civilization with no written record. What we are dealing with is a written record with no civilization. (Runtu, Feb 2015)

Perhaps they need to update the statue to this - http://imgur.com/KS2DNJo.jpg

or even better, this - http://imgur.com/rn1VoGk.jpg
