Why defend the church?

If people criticize and misrepresent the church, why the need to defend it or correct the alleged misrepresentations? If it's something you believe in, have faith that it has the correct teachings to get you into heaven and you live it, I fail to see why the need to defend it from it's detractors. Just live it silently and laugh all the way to the bank (or Celestial Kingdom in this case).

I mean, I like the movie "Mystery Men". It has a 60% favorable rating. I don't have to explain myself to people nor do I have to defend a movie that is subpar by most standards. I just like it.

The church isn't just about making people feel good about getting to heaven. It's supposed to be True. When the truth of the church is attacked, many people feel inclined to defend it.

And Mystery Men, while having its moments, is too long. It would have been much improved if they cut it by 20-30 minutes. As it is, it drags in places.

They're not defending it from detractors, they're defending their own testimony from doubts.

Agreed! I laugh so hard at some parts and then it gets bogged down. The pacing is not optimal in my opinion.

This is true. But instead of getting into a pissing match, why not keep the blinders on and decide to ignore the noise?

Because their blinders are already slightly off and they want to explore the noise.

It's an elitist complex. "I Know" this to be true. "I Know" God's plan. I guess if you know without a shadow of doubt then you can be protected from the noise and have a duty to always get the last word in.
