This nonsense might have been palatable in the magic world view of the nineteenth century, but today, one of the most (and many) embarrassing parts of the Book of Mormon are the references to cureloms and cumons. It is like something out of a child's fantasy story. I can't believe that I actually once believed this stuff.

Simple. Llama does exist...
Well then... where reasonable possibilities exist, there can be no reasonable denial. Hence, there essentially is no criticism of the LDS Church possible.

So, as I understand it, if in addition to mentioning horses, asses and elephants (+cureloms and cumoms) the Book of Mormon had mentioned jabberwocks and bandersnatches, there would have been no problem, so long as it was possible to find some animals on the American continent whose English names had not yet been mentioned.
Odd that 'God' didn't know the English words for those animals, though, but did know the names for horses, asses, and elephants. Maybe he is just a bit aphasic at times - maybe it's his age.
But basically, I am happy with this explanation from bcpsace. It will do a fine job in convincing the lurking investigators that Mormon apologetics only works for people who are so heavily invested in the CoJCoLDS that they have to swallow anything to keep their testimony intact.
