The LDS version of the hereafter allows foralmost all of the world's inhabitants to return to God's glory and an eternal place of happiness. So in answer to your question, no, a person wouldn't have to stay in or join the LDS Church to be either happy or have a place of happiness in the hereafter. If one desires to live with God the Father and participate/live in the Celestial Glory/City of God, so to speak, they would have to receive and be loyal/obedient to the covenants made within the Holy Temples. That, best as I can tell, is the doctrine of the church.
The basis of God belief, in my opinion, is that we look at life with purpose...eternal ramifications included. That is the foundation of receiving the glories of God's Celestial and Terrestrial kingdoms.

False!!! The only people that will return to God's glory are those that inherit the Celestial Kingdom. That number is very small according to the Latter-day Prophets and in fact, the vast majority of the earth's inhabitants will live in the terrestrial or telestial kingdoms. Don't you know your own doctrine man?

Pretty much, I think. The Celestial, Terrestrial, and Telestial kingdoms of glory are ALL under the umbrella of "The Kingdom of God". They are kingdoms of GLORY.

Except God does not visit the lessor kingdoms and therefore, most people will not return to live with God. Most people will not be in God's presence. Most people will be in a state of Hell knowing they will not be able to return to God again. So sure, the LDS doctrine uses a nice spin on words, but the reality in that doctrine is exactly like all other versions of heaven and hell. Call it GLORY all you want, but unless you can prove to me that the LDS doctrine is really any different than Heaven (living with God) or Hell (living without God), you have nothing unique that really saves anyone but the elite few that make it to Heaven (celestial kingdom)
So, Bot, do you as a LDS consider the legion of citations to LDS leaders intoning against LDS going to R rated movies to be teachings worth following or not? Is this a teaching from the LDS leaders that you choose not to put on your platter?

God the Father doesn't want those children, ever for all of eternity. How heavenly is it to live eternally knowing your Father doesn't want anything to do with you, ever?

Everyone who died before the age of eight gets a free ticket. All the people with developmental disabilities have a free ticket. Anyone who died without hearing about The One and Only True Church gets a second chance in the afterlife.
Consider what the infant mortality rate used to be, and still is in many places. Add to that all the good men with the "wrong" religion that many LDS believe will convert the "right" religion and you have a pretty rosy picture. Other faiths damn everyone else outright, and even in our modern age we have Christian sects massacring the unbelievers.

Only if they Obey or die before the Age of Accountability. 8 year olds are so accountable for their own actions...
Otherwise they end up in the Terrestrial Kingdom per my understanding.
