The idea emerged very early. It was an attempt to make Natives human within the literalist understanding of the Bible. It wasn't an anti-Semitic racist theory until Ethan Smith and his friends made it so. Perry Armstrong was deeply appreciative of the Indians, while not very well acquainted with Mormonism, and in the late 1800's used many Old Testament stories to draw analogies with the Natives. He wrote another book which indirectly slammed the Mormons-- although I am not sure which one he wrote first.

Problems with auto-correct:
In Helaman 6:39, we see the Badmintons, so similar to Skousenite Mormons, taking over the government and abusing the rights of many.
