LDS Church promotes Cafeteria Scouting - says Scout Leader

Post by _I have a question »

So, if Scouting is an inspired program that works, what does my ‘full declaration’ of what is wrong with Scouting consist of? One simple truth – we don’t implement the full program.

From my observation, many wards and stakes treat Scouting as if it were a buffet dinner, taking a little of this, a portion of that, and a side of something else. They implement only some of the program and then proclaim, “It doesn’t work! We’ve tried it!” They indict the program as a failure when in fact the failures arises as a direct result of the elements of the program they did not implement.

Let me illustrate with a few examples of perceived problems within Scouting that arise from our ‘selective implementation’.

The scouting program is nothing more than a framework for the missionary recruitment program for LDS INC.

The young men's program couldn't give a rats ass about earning the eagle badge. Goal #1 is to get every young vulnerable boy on a 2 year sales job a.k.a. "mission" for LDS Inc.

Scouting is used by the LDS Church to get the boys used to the importance of secret handshakes.

The problem is that LDS Scouting is implemented by course, where non-LDS scouting is elective. LDS Scout leaders don't implement the "full program" because doing so takes a lot of time and energy. Getting trained, planning, going to meetings and activities, following up with the boys and so on. There are some LDS Scoutmasters who will do this, but many don't because they don't care, or just don't have the time and energy.

The main problem imho, is small Wards. Two or three boys does not a patrol or troop make.

Aren't Wards the same size as they have always been?

Nope, small wards is the symptom.
36% activity is the symptom.
Under-utilised Temples is the symptom.
Jensens "droves" is the symptom.

Join those dots to understand the main problem, proof left to student.
