Smith, 72, set out from his home in Paradise, Utah on Monday to begin the roughly 80-mile walk.
“It just came to me,” says Smith when asked about the idea. “I’ve never seen anything done like this before.”
Draped over Smith’s shoulder as he travels is a wooden cross, at least twice his height. Emblazoned on both sides of the cross is the message, “Remember, Jesus loves us” in bright red paint.
“I thought it would bring a lot of attention to Christ,” says Smith, a high priest in the Paradise Second Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mormon carrying a cross to Conference...

“When we are confronted with evidence that challenges our deeply held beliefs we are more likely to reframe the evidence than we are to alter our beliefs. We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

Wow Impressive....an exact replica of the cross Jesus carried right down to the shoulder padding and the wheel at the base...impressive

What a slacker. A real Christian would be doing it on his knees while whipping himself and wearing a hair shirt crawling with lice after days of fasting and ceaseless mumbling to invisible beings.
I get a kick out of "stunt religion". Christians do wacky things with crosses, Muslims with Mecca, Krishnas and their rainbow dust. The Mormons need some kind of party trick that they can do. And when they leave, they can use it to win bets for beer in bars.

The wheel is a vital necessity. Without the wheel, the cross would get shorter and shorter as he drags it around.
Surprise, surprise, there is no divine mandate for the Church to discuss and portray its history accurately.

This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

If he wanted it to be authentic, it should really say, "Remember, I love you... which is why I'm leaving now to voluntarily die."
by the way, this dude's idea isn't original. A character did this in The Prince of Tides (the book, not the movie).
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

It's the symbolism of the crutch that tickled me.

Really he's never seen anything done like this before? It happens all the time all over the world, people carry them around the world, across the country, to pilgrimage sites. LDS just happen to be huge slackers in cross dragging activities.

Even more badly: on the Phillipines some maniacs let themselves quasi get crucified, and you are right, it happens all the time those lunatics carry a cross to pilgrem sites, across the country, and wherever.
Maybe LDS are slackers in cross dragging, because they don't hold the cross for the most important symbol of Christianity, because it doesn't symbolise the resurrected and living Jesus. It simply doesn't have such a great importance as a symbol for them, as it more symbolises the death of Jesus Christ.
I think, seen from this position, the Mormons are not quite wrong at all so far.
But this LDS guy is oh so special because he for the first time, ever in history, thought of dragging a cross about.
