We understand entirely that most of the Christian world and even Mormons actually understand perfectly well that it's a symbol of Christianity and within Christianity. Saying it's "false" is not how we look at it. It's a cross. We simply don't emphasis it, because like you said, we focus on his life and resurrection, not the instrument of his death. But, we do understand that to many, it's a powerful symbol, it's their symbolism. Not so much ours, we use different symbols to describe our Christainity generally, but anyway.

Why don't LDS people wear crosses?

It is clear that, by using the cross in such a publicity stunt, the Mormon in the OP is going against the admonition of the Church with regards to the usage of a cross for symbolic reasons.

Having a general belief and standard in a religion, doesn't mean exceptions don't also exist that allow for variety and the spice of life in many things, thus are still perfectly fine.
