The problem with Mr. Faqs' military stories is they don't make any sense. From him claiming to have no exposure to an M60 as a Marine (Ha!) to getting some other form of discharge other than an Honorable one for being sick... Well, none of it adds up. Nothing about his military service adds up, so it's natural to question it.

Say someone here claimed to be a teacher in New Jersey of all places (may god have mercy on their soul). They would occasionally sprinkle a conversation with some scenario when they were a teacher in rough and tumble New Jersey. BUT, that person would never:

1) Identify what schools districts they taught in.

2) Would conflate totally different curricula with one course and another.

ex.
I'm an ex-Marine, Infantry/Security Forces during the first Gulf War.

3) Would never identify their own education nor certification.

4) Never post any sort of verifying pictures of themselves at a school or in the classroom.

5) Not even have the most basic grasps of administrative, procedure, or policy of teaching in New Jersey.

6) Claims to have been fired for some non-fireable offense.

7) Finally posts a picture of someone teaching in a classroom, after swearing they're not going to do that, claiming that person is them, but without any context whatsoever other than some vague assertion they're awesome.

It wouldn't be beyond comprehension that anyone having taught in New Jersey would be skeptical. ETA: Especially if you hear every so often some lying jackass claiming to have been a New Jersey teacher in order to gain some sort of nonsense legitimacy.

Now, take it a step further, how would a teacher in New Jersey feel if a known rabble rouser nurse from California swoops in and posts, "I think it's disgusting that anyone would questions this person's credibility and teaching history."

It's probably likely Mr. Faqs did serve, I guess, but the fact that he's so obsequious to his obscurities regarding his service likely indicates he was a Paul H. Dunn-esque turd monster at best, but a liar at worse.

Hi, Ludwig. Sounds interesting. I'll check it out.

Hey, I'm happy to read about Paul H. Dunn. Hopefully something here on MDB about him. As for Nibley. You couldn't make me read anything more about him than I already have over the years. ;-)

I was a regular from 1963 (18 yo) to 2002 (57 yo). During that 39 years, I used to shoot with three or four dozens of weapon, as my duty:
- from 6.35 Zbrojowka

- to 57 mm AZP S-60 (Russian: Автоматическая зенитная пушка С-60, abbrev. АЗП AZP);

Yet the S-75 Dvina was in my scope, but - no wonder - I didn't want to sit in the Russian desert for a half year...

I have no paper about any type of "discharge". I am pensioned, the same way as other common jadders or ballet-dancers.

I have never ever shot at any living creature. There were enough cockshots.

Yes, Paul H. Dunn was a real piece of work.

In case you change your mind about Hugh Nibley, here's a thread that talks about his BS adventures during the D-Day landings, if you haven't already read it...

I don't think Dunn was crazy, just a damn liar.

This is as close as I can ever get to settling the weapons thing. If I read correctly, faqs said he served during Desert Storm. I don't remember much about Desert Storm. The resident lifer here served during Desert Shield, so similar time period I guess. All I remember about that is being scared.

That's all I got, people.

Continuing on...all I know is what I see in the pics that have been posted. The first one, though I haven't physically been there, puts me in mind of Camp Pendleton with palm trees in the background. I'm not familiar with the Marine uniform/rank/insignia, so I can't say if that's a guy coming out of basic at Pendleton or what. The second image, I'm not sure where that is. I can't even tell if those are desert fatigues or what, because they've changed over the years. They don't look like the desert fatigues that the resident lifer here wore during Desert Shield, which were an old style before they started issuing the digitized version of the uniform.

I am sure that those are unretouched photos of a guy in dress and combat uniform. I am sure that it's faqs.

I believe that the man made it through Marine basic (which is an accomplishment in itself compared to other branches) and served our country in uniform.

That is to say, I believe him.

With regard to the discharge. I can think of various scenarios that would result in a general or LTH discharge, etc. I can't think of a reason why that's my business.

I basically don't like people ragging on military about their discharges.

Here's another Mormon who went the Paul H Dunn route and managed to score a few bucks with a fake war story:
