Re: Monetize ponderize
Pardon my candor, but I'd like to address Rockslider's point. The cover up is always worse than the crime. I don't really think what he did was all that egregious. He and his son were trying to make a quick buck. This is America! This is an American church! This is what they do! But, what I find repugnant are the lies, obfuscation, and excuse-making vis a vis this business venture. When you have church employees willing to lie about an obvious business venture promoted from the bully pulpit some serious introspection is needed.

As I've thought about this, I wondered why, in trying to protect the domain or whatever, Durrant bought ponderize.us and ponderize.net and whatever else.
According to CougarBoard (http://www.cougarboard.com/board/messag ... d=14698931), ponderize.com was secured by John Hodapp of Brunswick, ME, registered 3/8/14. Interesting that there is a Dr. John Hodapp in Maine who works at the VA Hospital, and we know Rev. David Morrison, who wrote a book about "ponderize," is a disabled Vietnam Veteran. Connection? Friends? Is the good doc helping the good reverend? Who knows.
I don't know if it's used or not, but shouldn't that have thrown up a red-flag to Durrant? Did he try to purchase it from Hodapp, but couldn't?
Anyway, it's clear in my mind Durrant designed his general conference talk around his idea to make a few extra bucks.

Absolutely.
In a text message, Durrant told 2News he bought the domains "to protect them." He did not elaborate nor respond to follow-up questions.

I'll bet he didn't.

I wouldn't call it a scheme because I'm not interested in trying to vilify them, but I agree that it was a laughable turn of events.

What does this have to do with my comments about antagonistic out-groups and stereotyping?

DarkHelmet wrote:Devin should have waited at least a few months before starting the marketing campaign. Write a book about ponderizing and sell it through Deseret Books, and push your merchandise that way. That's how the other church leaders do it. But as a businessman he knows the importance of timing. It was critical to get those websites operational by the time he went live.
So you're just going to accept as fact the assumption that this was all orchestrated by Elder Durrant?

Protect them from antagonistic people or groups that would purchase them to post offensive or antagonistic material on them.

Oaks must have heard that someone associated with the church was apologizing, and stomped down there to kick his ass.
On the other hand, is Durrant even Mormon? I just went to his Tweeter page, and his bio reads like this:
Devin Durrant
@DurrantDevin
Profession: Investor/Teacher. Faith: Disciple of Christ. Family: I Feel So Blessed! Invitation: Ponderize.
Joined August 2010

So weird. Even by Mormon standards.

Nope. You keep coming back to that stereotyping, but for years I've shown you that my membership in the Church and my employment by the Church really have no bearing on my willingness to be critical of it. You will never know how laughable your assumption here is. I'm just pointing to the demonstrable fact that you all drum up self-serving assumptions that vilify Church leaders and then just decide they're facts.
Doctor CamNC4Me wrote:If I were a detective investigating whether or not Mr. Durrant had planned and executed a deliberate marketing campaign coupled with a deliberate business plan I would come to the conclusion that was the case.
It's a damn good thing you're not a detective.
Doctor CamNC4Me wrote:Pardon my candor, but Mr. Mak comes to an alternate understanding of reality through asymmetric thinking that only an 'in-group' Internet Mormon can appreciate. It smacks of thin gruel apologia if you ask me.
No, I just don't have to immediately assume the worst about certain people because it makes me feel better about my hatred of them.
