Okay, back. But I still haven't completely gathered my thoughts.
As I said in a post on a different thread, years ago seeing a large number of LDS speak out against the church and resign en masse, was something I only dreamed about. But I didn't dream it this way.
In the end, I think it's perfectly okay for a church to bar adults from participating in the church as members when their conduct doesn't meet church "standards".
I don't think that has anything to do with the teachings of Christ, but yeah it's probably okay.
I also think that after this wave has done it's damage, that the LDS church will continue on, the gay families will eventually give up trying to be a part of the church and that's perfectly okay with me to.
What bothers me most is what happens between now and "in the end". How many children are taking on damage from this, and what will be come of them. Surely there will be some incidents of suicide. I don't wish that on anyone--ever.
For the life of me, I cannot comprehend how the leaders of the church can employ such insular thinking as to not be aware of or count the cost in advance to the very youth they claim to be protecting.
It's beyond irresponsible.
It's beyond dangerous.
It's beyond heinous.
Not only that, it takes scriptural accounts of Jesus and his ministry and basically scribbles through it all. How can a church ignore the teachings of the very savior that it claims?
I think that is the basis for much of the comments I'm seeing online from TBM's. It's not so much that they are or are not opposed to same sex marriage. It's that they are seeing the leaders of their church toss away everything they've been taught in terms of Jesus ministry.
The leaders are forgetting that the folks in their churches have relationships. They don't want to see their friends be hurt. They want everyone to be "eligible" for receiving the gospel, the sacraments and a chance to live out the doctrines as they interpret and believe them in practice.
And one of the problems is that the church leaders have absolutely NO relationship with the membership.
They are completely and utterly out of touch with the grass roots not to mention reality.
When you see a group of leaders make a decision such as this, the automatic reaction (I think) is that they're not equipped to lead anything much less a body of members with vulnerable children.
My one hope is that in the end, the hand that rocks the cradle will rule this world.
And by that, I mean that the mothers will rise up and show them what true leadership really is.
