"They don't know who God is, they don't know who the Savior is, nor do they know who the Holy Ghost is"
That should play well at the Parliament of World Religions.

We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

Elder Ballard's statement is interesting to me because I was taught this as a bic Mormon. I thought the church had softened this rhetoric in recent years.

He is stating explicitly what Mormonism/Mormons believe and teach. But to hear an Apostle state it so unequivocally in a public, video taped speech, will have the PR department running for their play books. He just told everyone that the Pope doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to God. Brilliant!

The rhetoric I heard was always softer than this, though. I have never heard anyone say that Catholics don't know God. It was more along the lines of, 'you're somewhat mistaken about the nature of God.'
Ballard's approach is very different from Hinckley's: "To people everywhere we simply say, ‘You bring with you all the good that you have, and let us add to it.' That is the principle on which we work."
No chance that Ballard's remarks were prompted by the fact that Catholics all over the world are returning to their church, in large part because of the more liberal (and dare I say humanist) views and policies of Pope Francis, while defensive doubling down on fundamentalism by LDS Church leadership is having the opposite effect on Mormons.
David Hume: "---Mistakes in philosophy are merely ridiculous, those in religion are dangerous."
DrW: "Mistakes in science are learning opportunities and are eventually corrected."

Oh, but I hope they don't figure it out. It's fun watching them show their true colors.
No kidding! Hasn't anyone explained to Internet to that idiot?
When I was on my Peruvian mission the Catholics would give handouts quoting Mormon leaders' thoughts on the Catholic church (and it wasn't pretty). Now? Now that everyone is getting more and more connected? The mishies are going to have a tough time when Mormon leadership is giving real time bulletin board material to Catholics.

What a derp.
"Chevrolet owners don't know how to drive. They don't know what a car is. They don't even know what a steering wheel is. The Yugo, that's a great car. My father and his father drove Yugos and were perfectly happy all the time."
The real irony is that Brigham Young would have said the same thing to present-day Ballard:
He doesn't know who God is: Brigham would say, God is of course Adam who came down from Kolob with one of his wives, Eve, to start the human race. Not some being who looks remarkably like the mainstream Christian God when LDS talk to mainstream Christians, nor an ill-defined "I don't know if we preach that, I don't know if we believe that" kind of being when LDS talk to the media.
He doesn't know who the Savior is: Brigham would say, The savior is of course NOT Jehovah and really doesn't play much part in salvation because salvation is all about being sealed to the right people and making blood atonement for your sins. Not the being who sort of looks like the mainstream Christian Savior.
Nor does he know who the Holy Ghost is: Brigham would say, The Holy Ghost is definitely not the being who begets Jesus in the flesh. Adam/God definitely screwed Mary who was one of his wives. Not that pseudo mainstream Christian stuff Ballard preaches today which says that the Holy Ghost mysteriously begets Jesus.
