I think that this is a valid question. This situation would fall under the same category as erotic dreams. The brethren have counseled us that we aren't responsible for what we dream about. Thank goodness. With the Lord, I think that our intentions are important. I can imagine God saying something like this: "Woe unto him that intentionally drinketh of the hot shower water." I'm confident that the God would look with mercy upon the soul that inadvertently drinks hot shower water.

Here is recent study on coffee consumption and mortality:
http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/early/2015/11/10/CIRCULATIONAHA.115.017341.full.pdf+html?sid=5c4b9ef3-96dd-44b8-8188-0a3ca2ec8c9d

This study is not of the cause and effect variety. I would imagine it would be a bit cumbersome to setup/fund a RTC looking at coffee consumption vs placebo. Here's the final paragraph for all you tl;dr's:

"In conclusion, regular consumption of coffee was inversely associated with risk of total mortality and mortality due to CVD, and neurological disease. Similar associations of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption with risk of total and cause-specific mortality were found. Results from this and previous studies indicate that coffee consumption can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle."

Interesting that it didn't matter if the coffee was caffeinated or not.

Does that mean you agree with me now?

Nope - mainly because you are citing anecdotal evidence against settled science.

The issue is whether consumption of 3-5 cups of coffee per day is associated with the beneficial health effects described in the USDA Report. Evidence that this such the case is clear.

Interesting, but not too surprising when one considers the abundance of antioxidants, alkaloids, and other potentially beneficial phytochemicals, including essential oils, found in roasted coffee beans.

No. No I wasn't. You can be pretty obtuse at times.

Let's see. You said that you found the claim in the USDA Report of health benefits from consumption of 3-5 cups of coffee per day to be "dubious".

You then cited your personal observations as evidence that the claims of beneficial health effects in the USDA Report were wide of the mark.

In what way did I mischaracterize your statements?

Using my own common sense, I can look around and see people who consume large amounts of caffeine (in various forms) and observe the impact it has on them. I see a lot of people who seem dysfunctional and can't do anything until they've had their red bull or their coke or their cup of joe or whatever. They complain of headaches. They use the energy boost as a means of avoiding having to discipline themselves. They become dependent on it. Heavy consumption from time to time in a special circumstance is one thing, but living like this day in day out, I don't see it as being healthy.

I don't see anyone like you describe In other words I've never met a person who is as dependent as you portray or as negatively affected by caffeine or lack of it. It looks more like confirmation bias to me.

In 20+ years in the military, probably the most coffee-addled culture in the country, I've never seen anyone described like WD describes 'coffee addicts' to be. If anything people would sip on coffee so they're not stuffing their faces with donuts or some other crap people tend to do these days.

I still find it humorous that, apparently, it's the temperature that makes the difference. Once the product isn't a "hot drink" you're good to go. Lol. If only I knew...

On the subject of hot drinks that are the gateway to hell according to the LDS Church, many of the same natural products that make coffee a healthful hot drink are also found in tea - black or green.

A comment made elsewhere on the board (by MG If I recall correctly) indicated that green tea (but not black tea), was semi-acceptable for consumption by Mormons (if not by the letter of the law, at least culturally).

It is therefore of interest that green tea has not been shown to have the same level of health benefit as conventional black tea. Regular consumption of black tea has been associated with a slightly reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, but does not appear to be as protective against cardivascular disease as coffee.

However, protective effects of black tea consumption against pretty much all types of cancer have been reported in the peer reviewed scientific literature . (Also see references cited here).

There is good reason that a wide variety of coffee and/or tea products are consumed, in some form or other, by virtually all cultures on the planet. It is because, overall, coffee and tea are healthful natural products that confer an evolutionary advantage on the populations that consume them.

So if I buy a coffee and wait for it to cool down, at what temperature does it cease to be a WoW infringement?
