Utah confirmed as most deviant state in nation

Post by _Maksutov »

From the article:

Utah achieved a score of 80.37 percent out of 100, or No. 45 of 50.

That means the only states less like America overall are: Massachusetts (79.67 percent), Alabama (79.6 percent), West Virginia (79.5 percent), Mississippi (78.32 percent) and Vermont (77.94 percent).

The study said the states most like America as a whole are: Illinois (94.35 percent), Florida (94.32 percent), Michigan (93.17 percent) and Arizona (92.67 percent).

Utah finished last in the nation for how similar it is to America for religion (because of the state's heavy concentration of Mormons), the age of residents and the makeup of its households (Utah has the lowest median age by far because of its numerous children and large families).

Utah also ranked No. 48 for how far its "wealth gap" between rich and poor is compared to the nation.

Didn't it also win the "State Most Like Iran" award? Or was it North Korea? My peepstone needs an upgrade.

This is as it should be, for how many other states have sure knowledge that they are the Lord's chosen?

Utah Mormons are in a class by themselves. Most Mormons in other parts of the country are much more normal. I grew up in CA and when I lived in Utah fot 8 years I came extremely close to leaving the Church altogether. It was not the Church I recognized. The people I dealt with in Utah were extremely rude and entitlement oriented. I won't say that all Utah Mormons are like this, but the ward in Orem that I lived in was very much that way.

I grew up in Utah as a non-Mormon. I didn't really realize until I moved away how oppressive it was. Even now, when I visit Utah, I get momentarily depressed when I cross the Utah boarder.

There seems to be a palpable sense of 'chip-on-the-shoulder' defensiveness in Mormons in small Southern Utah towns. It's hard to explain, but I have had a few uncomfortable experiences when exploring those areas.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

Deviant people tend to play with their food. Normal people just kill each other.

I have too, Quasi. There are some folks in the south who view strangers with obvious suspicion and don't mind intimidating you a bit for jollies. These are some of the same folks who think of the federal government as the antichrist or at least Stalin, Mao and Hitler combined in bureaucratic form.

It reminds me of a line from the (highly recommended) book, Better Off Without 'Em, by Chuck Thompson. The book is a rant against the South, and a semi-serious exploration of whether the United States would be better off if we let the South secede. In one section, it talks about "southern hospitality" and tries to make the case that it is largely a myth. The book claims:

The more “natural” southern character was, in fact, one of coven suspicion and standoffishness, as typified by the shotgun-next-to-the-front-door, arsenal-in-the-gun-cabinet hillbilly stereotype. If a “nicest people” trophy were to be awarded to one state, it’d have to go to Utah. screwed up as that place can be.

Thompson, Chuck (2012-08-14). Better Off Without 'Em (p. 261). Simon & Schuster, Inc.. Kindle Edition.
