Book of Mormon prophesies about Joseph Smith? Wait a minute!

Post by _kairos »

Well I am sitting in Gospel Doctrine class today with TBM my wife. Teacher , now lawyer, was institute teacher gives us a list in 2 nephi 3 where the Book of Mormon turns it attention to designating/attesting to/prophesying about this seer who is to come. And guess who the Lord and Joseph of Egypt says it is ? By golly it is Joseph Smith. No less than 4 verses contains "evidence" that Joseph Smith has the same name as Joseph of Egypt and of his father Joseph Smith senior- Hallejulah!! And will be the seer to come- further this seer to be, is so designated in 570BC or thereabouts. The class is overwhelmed that the Book of Mormon so clearly designates Joseph as prophet , seer etc. Not a soul was willing to ask- how do we know Joseph didn't just write that in and it wasn't really on the plates. Heresy, apostacy! "The Book of Mormon is true they shout- Joseph Smith is a prophet".

So I spoke up and said, giving nonmember input- " you know those verses would be pretty convincing to an investigator in the early days of the church as the missionaries could point them to Joseph S. as fulfilling the words of the 2 nephi verses and they could point out Joseph in their midst and likely would join the church." Yes brother Kairos you are absolutely correct -yea those verses prove Joseph Smith a prophet.

Of course in my mind I was shouting BS! it's all BS. Joseph was simply making up the Book of Mormon and he needed filler after those 116 pages disappeared so ole joe just put in some verses to make sure everyone knew God had made him the fulfillment of the prophesies he was making up.

Why can't the TBM's see that or at least question the Book of Mormon?

Brainwashed is my only answer-what's yours?

NOM my wife reported home from GD class today saying that the teacher had (for the first time to her knowledge) mentioned FAIR as a resource for those having questions about Church history.

According to my wife, the teacher had said that the best and the brightest of the LDS Church had done the research and provided well thought out and faithful answers to pretty much any difficult question regarding Church history or doctrine that might come up among the membership.

This statement was quite a surprised to my wife. She had never imagined that the Church would send anyone to the internet, given the dire warnings regarding the misinformation the Church always claimed was to be found there. my wife thought many of the class members had come away with the distinct impression that the Church is on the defensive about its history.

I took the opportunity to explain to her what FAIR was and some of the ridiculous apologia that could be found there. I invited her to sit down with me and explore this Mormon resource. She looked at me a said, "What's the point?"

"Exactly", I replied. We stopped off to help out a cancer patient who lives in our ward before heading out to enjoy a Sunday afternoon meal at the beach.

my wife is getting this NOM thing down pretty well. She can compartmentalize the LDS Church, with the associated friendships, responsibilities, and unending BS, without having it spill over into, or interfere with, our real life.

The Book of Mormon features incredibly accurate prophesies of Columbus, the America Revolution, and the restoration of the gospel by Joseph Smith. Oddly it's silent on events after 1830. Nothing about the Civil War, The Pioneer trek, or Gay Marriage. Apparently Nephi's visions of the future only reached to the 1820s.

Actually the Book of Mormon prophesies about today and the apostasy of the LDS Church.

3 Nephi 16:10-12
10 And thus commandeth the Father that I should say unto you: At that day when the Gentiles shall sin against my gospel, and shall reject the fulness of my gospel, and shall be lifted up in the pride of their hearts above all nations, and above all the people of the whole earth, and shall be filled with all manner of lyings, and of deceits, and of mischiefs, and all manner of hypocrisy, and murders, and dpriestcrafts, and whoredoms, and of secret abominations; and if they shall do all those things, and shall reject the fulness of my gospel, behold, saith the Father, I will bring the fulness of my gospel from among them.
11 And then will I remember my covenant which I have made unto my people, O house of Israel, and I will bring my gospel unto them.
12 And I will show unto thee, O house of Israel, that the Gentiles shall not have power over you; but I will remember my covenant unto you, O house of Israel, and ye shall come unto the knowledge of the fulness of my gospel.

And there is way older prediction of Joseph Smith than 570 BC like from the foundation of the earth carved in stone on a mountain side in Utah.....

We have this from the sealed portion of the Book of Mormon.

chapter 93
The error of cosmetic surgery because of vanity is touched upon.

But nothing beyond what Nemelka is familiar with. Hmmm. There seems to be a pattern here.

Those who are holier than the residue of mankind and the seed of Cain will readily see the testimonies written in the following items of food.

The testimony of Seitan, item 22, is not acceptable to Jesus however.

A composition is evidence of intelligent design. The inability or refusal to acknowledge intelligent design lacks integrity.
