Finally an official publication makes it clear that the church has no official position on Evolution. The church also opens the door to human Evolution.
Oct 2016 Ensign
The Church has no official position on the theory of evolution. Organic evolution, or changes to species’ inherited traits over time, is a matter for scientific study. Nothing has been revealed concerning evolution. Though the details of what happened on earth before Adam and Eve, including how their bodies were created, have not been revealed, our teachings regarding man’s origin are clear and come from revelation.
Before we were born on earth, we were spirit children of heavenly parents, with bodies in their image. God directed the creation of Adam and Eve and placed their spirits in their bodies. We are all descendants of Adam and Eve, our first parents, who were created in God’s image. There were no spirit children of Heavenly Father on the earth before Adam and Eve were created. In addition, “for a time they lived alone in a paradisiacal setting where there was neither human death nor future family.” They fell from that state, and this Fall was an essential part of Heavenly Father’s plan for us to become like Him.
According to Pew, 40% of Mormons believe in Evolution! I hope it keeps getting better. The church also needs to open the door to the Global Warming theory because too many Mormons deny it. http://www.pewforum.org/religious-lands ... ious-group

So who were all those humans? Is the church now saying a human body can exist without a spirit? How exactly does that fit into the plan of salvation? Are there humans living today without spirits also? Crazy breeds crazy

Mormonism reminds me of the Oxbow Incident, only it is the truth and common sense rather than innocent 'murderous cattle rustlers' that get lynched by Mormons.
The church has taken this position for many decades, although you never see it really taught over the pulpit. You do still get leaders preaching against evolution from time to time.
Also it's 42% LDS who believe in evolution to some extent. Much better then in the past. Just over half still believe YEC, but hopefully in the near future they will finally be a minority.

Now here's the thing. I know for a fact that I have an element of Neanderthal DNA (that will come as no surprise to many of you ) Which, according to the Church, means I am descended from Adam, Eve and a Pre-Adamite who had no spirit.
“When we are confronted with evidence that challenges our deeply held beliefs we are more likely to reframe the evidence than we are to alter our beliefs. We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

While this is great for the Mormons from the Dark Ages, I am afraid this might make them a bit snooty when it comes to relating to the Mormons of the 21st Century who share the same pews with their Dark Ages counterparts every Sunday.
Dogs have always been dogs, which is why there are dangerous packs of Chihuahua'a roaming the Midwest, and you have to capture and tame one if you want it for a pet.
Although if you believe the Earth is 6000 years old, then for sure dogs have always existed since 6000 years ago.
Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.
