It's even worse than looking at scientology though. Most TBM's can look at the FLDS as those crazy polygamists. Seriously though, the FLDS is probably closer to the church Joe started than mainstream LDS and yet, TBM's lack the ability to apply critical thought to their own version of religion.

Newsflash, Mormonism is some crazy crap. That's why people who look at you from the outside lump you into the same category as scientologists or JW's.

In the hopes that your OP wasn't an invitation to lob crap at the religion and/or it's people, I'll answer you.

When you are indoctrinated to something from birth, it represents your normal. That's why it's difficult to see parallels between one religion and another or one culture and another or one family and another or even one person and another.

You and others are free to call it crazy crap because you and others likely lived it and departed the scene. However, it comes off as obnoxious.

Just so you know.

It's not a lob, and I certainly wouldn't frame it this way to a general chapel Mormon and since the likelihood of any chapel Mormon perusing this board to be very low, I hope those that do visit understand the question. It is however a serious question to MG and others that do frequent this board. How do you realistically look at the parallels and not see the same crazy pointing back at you in the face? It seems those like MG have been exposed enough that indoctrination is no longer a good answer.

As much as his Snapple Iced Tea guzzling butt would love to sport Hanes®, he knows his ass would be in a sling faster than you can say "in the name of cheese n rice and rattly snakes AMEN" if he pulled a Kerry Shirts!

Before mental derails yet another thread, back to the topic.

I'd be interested too, Sanctorium, in how old you were when your shelf started to crack, if that's not too personal a question to ask?

I was 30.

Some major concerns that led to the collapse, billions of people not receiving the Celestial Kingdom simply because they weren't born into it. (Don't tell me they have a chance in the next life. The doctrine is pretty clear only a comparable few will accept their proxy work) I also hated the fact that being born Mormon actually made it harder to enter the Celestial Kingdom as you had greater light and knowledge than someone not Mormon and therefore you were more accountable for your transgressions. I also didn't like the fact Motab would be the music of eternity while Pearl Jam would be rocking the telestial world.

But, at the end of the day, Joseph Smiths polygamy/polyandry/pedophilia was the item the collapsed my shelf. He's a predator and would be in prison in today's environment. I can't support a God that his chosen elect is a disgusting perverted criminal. If Joe were alive and approached my daughter with the flaming sword story, I'd have no problem taking him out back and beating the crap out of him. As such, he was no longer a prophet to me and I think it's disgusting a MG type character supports and reveres such a disgusting human being like horny Joe Smith.

But hey, to each their own.

well i am not so sure the lds church measures up to the flds one on lunacy- reading the "witness wore red" rebecca musser the 19th wife of prophet rulon writes some crazy s#*t going on. She was number 19 at 19 y/o and had to take her turn with 88 ? old rulon who could hardly get up or lie down by himself- mainly she slept beside the prophet but he demanded "oral" but since he apparently had ED so bad he sometimes fell asleep as a wife was trying to get him going- hilarious! 48 wives came after rebecca-life in the 2 geographically separated compounds- was a circus-she escaped and eventually took warren jeffs down as witness in his trial.
So the flds leaders were focused on sex while the lds leaders are focused on power, control and $$$-which is worse- equally bad imho.
