The Importance of Honest History

I echo IHAQ. The church tells only what's already out there and the essays are still not fully forthcoming. One wonders what the Joseph Smith Papers project has edited down the memory hole.

It still doesn't disclose its finances for f#%@ sakes!!

Let's examine the Church's new found desire to tell the truth about its history with one simple question:

What did we learn from the essays that hadn't already been revealed by someone other than the Church?

Conclusion? The Church hasn't come clean, it's only 'told' the bare minimum based on what was already 'out there'.

One sign of humility is having the ability to admit one is wrong. That seems to be lacking throughout the history of the church, even with the essays.

LDS apostle Dallin H. Oaks set off a global chain reaction among Mormons this week, when he said he wasn't sure apologizing for the faith's past rhetoric on homosexuality would be advisable.

"I know that the history of the church is not to seek apologies or to give them," Oaks said in an interview Tuesday. "We sometimes look back on issues and say, 'Maybe that was counterproductive for what we wish to achieve,' but we look forward and not backward."

The church doesn't "seek apologies," he said, "and we don't give them."
