Millenials - belief first, religious affiliation second

Post by _Sanctorian »

“Millennials are more likely to say their beliefs first and their affiliation second,” Sturgeon said. “Where it used to be the other way around.”

I had a BYU friend over last night. We discussed the perceived issues he sees in millenials. He found them to be lazy, entitled, and showing a lack of commitment.

I suggested the opposite and am quite optimistic about Millenials. I think one of their greatest attributes is their ability to make friends globally. Race, religion, nationality, gender and sexuality does not create division amongst millenials. As such, organization that try to create artificial divisions and barriers are losing millenials. It must be hard for those old geezers downtown to see a future without such restrictions.

The millennials I'm acquainted with display more humanity, more principled behavior, are less materially minded and demonstrate more inclusivity regardless of race, gender, belief system, physical or mental capacity etc than my generation or any previous generation. Mind you, the millennials I'm referring to aren't religious. Coincidence? I think not. They seem to appreciate this life simply as a finite period for them, and that drives the behaviors I mention. They appear intent on making the most of the societal relationships within their time span of being alive, just at face value.

I think we can learn more from their example than anything you can possibly hear at any religious conference.

We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

That's a pretty huge swath of humanity. I don't have any opinions or observations to consider Millenials any more peculiar or unique than any other generation that's ever lived. I see some positive and negative trends in the greater society that could also affect them in many ways. It's more dynamic and complex than we can begin to understand fully. But it's worth trying.

The millennials I know seem to be more apt to question authority. Authoritarian Mormons obviously don't like it. Combine that with the trend to not believe in Mormon bull crap any more and you have a religious emergency. However, I think the laziness categorization, etc. was said about my "Gen-X" generation and the baby boomers that came before. No one can supposedly live up to the WWII generation, at least in their minds. However, the WWI generation seemed to say the same thing about their WWII children. Go figure.

Anyway, I applaud the millennials every time they question and have the confidence to succeed.

Religiosity increases with age.

I think Maksutov tends closer to the truth about millennials, therefore, but although we can't apply attributes too widely, there are some absolute dead certainties with regard to one generation that are unquestionably true across the board:

1. American baby boomers have been the most privileged cohort in human history.

2. They had no problem growing up in a welfare state and enjoying its benefits, but when it came time to be taxpayers they set about destroying it so they could pay for their goddamned and god-awful McMansions.

3. Even when they don't seem to be talking about themselves, baby boomers are talking about themselves.

4. Exempli gratia: the greatest generation is a myth invented by baby boomers who are shot through to the marrow with guilt for being such ungrateful dicks to their parents.

5. Exempli gratia bis: public discussion on senior sexuality arose only as baby boomers became seniors, just as the sexual revolution was set in motion by baby boomers discovering sex.

6. Tucking a shirt into shorts while wearing knee-length socks and a damn phone holster are insulting even to blind people. You're either on vacation or you're not, so make up your mind, dumbass.

7. These idiots should retire so us youngins can get some jobs already. If you admire the WWII generation so much, quit building wealth well into your 70s so you can pretend to have a "fulfilling" life in your 80s and instead do what the greatest generation did: sit on your ass for ten years and watch reruns of Matlock and Bonanza while passing on the torch—that is how you can finally honor thy father and they mother, you jackasses, and do right by your children, you selfish pricks. Or maybe we should start voting away the Medicare that you keep denying us.

Items 1-7 are absolutely and self-evidently factual and true to anyone born before 1945 and after 1980 (those poor genXers are just confused).
