"If it be the devil as an angel of light,..."

D&C 129 wrote:1 There are two kinds of beings in heaven, namely: Angels, who are resurrected personages, having bodies of flesh and bones—
2 For instance, Jesus said: Handle me and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
3 Secondly: the spirits of just men made perfect, they who are not resurrected, but inherit the same glory.
4 When a messenger comes saying he has a message from God, offer him your hand and request him to shake hands with you.
5 If he be an angel he will do so, and you will feel his hand.
6 If he be the spirit of a just man made perfect he will come in his glory; for that is the only way he can appear—
7 Ask him to shake hands with you, but he will not move, because it is contrary to the order of heaven for a just man to deceive; but he will still deliver his message.
8 If it be the devil as an angel of light, when you ask him to shake hands he will offer you his hand, and you will not feel anything; you may therefore detect him.
9 These are three grand keys whereby you may know whether any administration is from God.
Who here reading this has had a visitation that he or she tested with the three grand keys?

There doesn't seem to be any readers willing to detail experiences shaking hands with angels or demons. Pitty, that would have been interesting.
I think we should add a forth. If you reach out your hand to the being in front of you and he takes it and doesn't let go. Justs pumps it up and down for an uncomfortable amount of time, it's Donald Trump.

Trump is the 4th? At nothing, he'll tell you; he's the first in all things.
Anyway, in JSjr's day, extraterrestrial visitations were apparently common enough that the Lord needed to give 3 keys to the Saints--a revelation to JSjr to be canonized and published--for how they could test what kind of a non-mortal personage that was visiting them. If no Mormons were having such experiences, why did the Lord dispense this 3-keys test as a revelation to JSjr to be included in canonized scripture? It must have seemed more than merely academic to E/J and/or JSjr on Feb 9, 1843, date of the revelation.
More to the point today then is why have these visitations stopped, from angels, perfected spirits and/or the devil as if an 'angel of light'? If someone came forward and said he had such a visitation and so applied the test, as a result of which he determined it was, say, a perfected spirit or even an angel, would the upstream hierarchy of the LDS church accept it? No. They'd tamp it down, similar to the way that the LDS hierarchy distanced the church and themselves from Nightlion. Is this proof that if one accepts the LDS claims of restoration in the mid-19th Century, that JSjr's church has, like it claims Peter's church did, apostatized?

Sock, have you never been called on to help in a Mormon style exorcism?

No. No, I have not. Nor have I had an extra-human visitation.

I was called on by a super ultra TBM once upon a time to go with him to help cast out a devil, arm to the square boldly in the name of Jesus and all.
I wonder if one source of evil possession is not a result of anal probing?

Anal probing might the 4th key.
How was it first determined that it was a devil and not an angel or perfected spirit that you'd be casting out?

I've had a similar experience. An elderly couple moved into the ward so the Priesthood Moving Company™ swooped in. After a few hours of heavy lifting the wife mentioned that she felt an "evil air" about the house. The husband asked me to join him in essentially casting out the spirit and giving the house a priesthood blessing... even as a TBM it struck me as mighty odd. To my knowledge, they did not test this spirit with these keys. They probably tossed out their guardian angel.

Smith used the knowledge and powers given by the ETs for evil. That's why he was allowed to die. The ETs withdrew at that point in disgust. The stories, visions and pretenses to powers and knowledge claimed after him were inventions of the demonic followers whom the ETs had rejected. They have formed a cargo cult which yearns for revisits of the ETs while using the stories to exploit the faithful.
