I have never taught that the creation of the earth is less than billions and billions of years old.

The dawn of creation of OUR cycle was when God the Eternal Father called into 'independent' existence our intelligence by commandment and giving all intelligence respective to their sphere and element the 'knowledge' of how to organize accordingly. We were given the knowledge of being human.
We still were not gender specific only spheres of light. And thus was the Great God the father of lights. Not just us but all life that was called out in The Beginning. We abide in that phase for billions and billions of years. Then the time came to be added upon.
Just as from the light of truth we had to sacrifice (being part of the power of God in all things and through all things) to get independent spheres of existence now we would be required to submit to gender assimilation. That would mean giving up a chunk of our full intelligence making it impossible for us to rival God who retains a fullness of light and truth and is greater in intelligence than all else put together.
A great number craved to remain as God is and refused to surrender to the demands of gender assimilation. There was War in Heaven and these were cast out from being added upon. This was the infamous one third of the hosts of heaven. They are clever devils and with the matrix of their orchestrations of light can deceive the very elect. They fight against God proving their ilk and became a ready test against further progress for those who moved on.
To provide spirit and natural bodies for the intelligence that was to be added upon Adam and Eve were made in the image (Celestial glory) of God and COMMANDED to multiply and replenish the world. (Continue the seeds OUT of the world, before they were sent to continue the seeds IN the world) In the Second chapter of Genesis it says that they finished all the hosts there of. That means the billions and billions of years it took Adam and Eve, and however many other wives might have been given to Adam, to provide all the spirit bodies for the 30 some odd billions of us to come to this world continued on BUT the Earth upon which these may dwell was cobbled together from the elements at hand from the beginning of God calling forth the man and woman.
So the earth proper is as old as the entire time mankind was residing in the spirit body phase of what LDS deem the pre-existence.
I did not mean to expound so much but you tempteth me too much. So The Apocalrock was not made in a day. It could have been fitted and refitted to its present wonder and glory for billions and billions of years of God's own art. All to confound the latter-day atheists with empirical evidence beyond all refutation. A day and time when the wickedness of man's denial of God was fit for the flames. Next will be the world seeing the coming of the Son of Man. That's too will be empirical evidence that the world might repent. But will they?
Man now again refuses the sacrifice required to be added upon in the next life, which is to deny themselves of THIS world, as the token of baptism signifies of laying down your life as if dead to the world to be taken up to a newness of life in Christ Jesus and to be visited of the Promise of the Father with the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost as the gospel of Jesus Christ commands.
