I guess it they wanted to commit suicide. Everyone knows of the super natural protective properties of the garmmies, thus taking them off was suicide, right?

They only had one pair and they were dirty and they didn't think they would be in jail long? I think it has been said that Richards wore his, so it was probably not an order by Joseph to remove them.
