Re: CALLING PHIL JENKINS!!!!! CALLING PHIL JENKINS!!!!!!
“If the work of Mormon scholars in the past 50 years has proven anything, it is that a rigorous defense of the Book of Mormon’s historicity can and has been made in such a compelling manner that one must confront this body of scholarship and adequately account for it before one can propose any Inspired Fiction reading.”
Well, Smoot, I guess then that the work of Mormon scholars in the past 50 years has not proven anything, because it certainly has not made a case for Book of Mormon historicity, much less a compelling one that would require any attention.

too funny, yes perhaps enough time has passed that all has been forgotten and we can try these arguments all over again

I actually agree. The "Inspired Fiction" argument hangs on god's inspiring Joseph Smith. If he can do that, and if he would do that, he can certainly lead an old Israelite to Costa Rica to start a civilization that has left no trace—and why wouldn't he, since that is what the book claims? "Inspired Fiction" is an invention of academic Mormons who transmute their nostalgia into a theory. It's sentimentality dressed up as an argument.
On the other hand, the "plain old fiction, and rather uninspiring fiction" reading doesn't require much explanation, and nothing that apologetic scholarship of the past 50 years has put forward puts a dent in that very obvious theory because

Jeffrey R. Holland, Christ and the New Covenant: The Messianic Message of the Book of Mormon (Salt Lake City, UT: Deseret Book, 1997): Elder Holland’s fascinating study of the Book of Mormon’s message about Jesus Christ. Serious reflect that reveals a depth of meaning and power in the book that is hard to believe came from an unlearned farmboy.
Is that what passes as "scholarship" in apologetics these days?
It's embarrassing and a bit sad.
“When we are confronted with evidence that challenges our deeply held beliefs we are more likely to reframe the evidence than we are to alter our beliefs. We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

Talk about burden shifting. "We've produced reams of Texas sharp shooter fallacies and parallel mania without being able to produce a single point of physical evidence now it is up to you to show the Book of Mormon false."

Will you please remind us of Phil Jenkins's significance and what his connection to Mormonism is?

He handed Bill Hamblin his ass in a public forum.

Nothing stupid about not knowing, candygal. Phil Jenkins is a professor at Baylor University who "famously" (at least in the Mormon internet term) debated Bill Hamblin, a professor and apologist from BYU. By nearly all accounts (read everyone but Mormons) Jenkins moped the floor with Hamblin across multiple blog posts back and forth.
The basic breakdown went like this:
paraphrased Jenkins wrote:Show me one piece of physical evidence in the New World to suggest the Book of Mormon is true.
paraphrased Hamblin wrote:Well you see the thing is...{lots of obfuscation and no evidence}
This went on, back and forth, for quite some time. You can find the play-by-play with links to the original blogs here.
