Ideology is what it all is all right. To be able to actually see that and do something about it, is a rare blessing!

Two comments Philo,

First...Mormonism, for many, once realized it is false, rips the idea of concept of their being a God out of ones heart. And secondly...#4 on the link is laughable...LDS are taught, in regards to their faith, to basically learn what they are told and not go outside approved material.

When I left the church I went to, and still go to, a non denominational denomination ( a inside joke). But I was amazed of the home fellowships where folks of like minds can just get together and study on what they choose to study. Some of these studies got way off track...but they were open to do so. Could you imagine a bunch of Mormons getting together without approval and going through a study on blood atonement or reformed theology? That was a shocker to me and I do not remember ever being encouraged to think outside the box as a member.

Maybe that's true, maybe not. For me there was a progression that didn't start with Mormonism and didn't end with skepticism towards God-belief. That article Philo shared is not far off from my own experience in that there is a lesson learned in having one's worldview proven fatally flawed. I've anecdotally observed people bop around between worldviews after Mormonism, including returning and again leaving Mormonism over the years, seen people lose a sense of meaning in life, seen people make some other thing an object of worship and faith, seen people change over years.

I don't know that there is something unique about Mormonism that those who choose to be Christian can sincerely and justifiably say, "Leaving Mormonism makes a person less likely to find the demonstrable truth of Christian belief." It may seem like Mormonism killed God to those who have found such a belief when they get met with skepticism from those who kept on questioning their way all the way out of organized religious belief. But that seems like projection rather than sincere observation.

Personally I think much more than anything it has to do with how one finds community post-Mormonism. You may have a better argument suggesting that the post-Mormon community has developed into something that is agnostic or atheistic and these become more likely to be picked up by those working their way out of the LDS church. But I’d still argue that is just focusing on one of the many, many places people find themselves post-Mormonism. Why exclude the Denver Snuffer post-SLC group that still self-identify as Mormons from this discussion for example? Or those who choose to live lives following the example of Christ they learned and believe in without organization or profession of belief beyond their own example? Beyond Mormonism, I doubt we have a really good understanding of what it means to be a “none” that came from any faith tradition, honestly, as it seems to include far more than just atheism in any hardline sense of the term.

Sociologically speaking, religious community is just one of many forms of community that are being challenged by change. I think we’d do well to step back and observe it rather than rush to label or pretend to understanding.
