Book of Mormon stories that the scholars tell to me

Post by _Philo Sofee »

My friend Corsair over on the NOM board said
"I have a good friend who picked up John L. Sorenson's magnum ops, "Mormon's Codex: An Ancient American Book". This is the absolute top scholarly work on the subject. After my friend read through this book it was clear to him that the Book of Mormon was baloney with no basis in real history. For him, the hints of a Mesoamerican culture for the Book of Mormon simply added up to how there is simply nothing there to substantiate the historicity of the Book of Mormon.

It is true that "Mormon's Codex" has bolstered the faith of some other stalwart Mormons I know. And I also know that the city of Troy was thought to be a myth for a long time. But this does not mean that we should therefore hold out empirical hope for the city of Zarahemla being found. Mormons simply have a lot of faith in the evidence that has not quite been discovered yet."

Have any of you read Sorenson's most recent attempts? I have to confess I haven't, and probably won't. That' a huge investment in time for little return based on other views I have read about it.

Does he haven anything new that he didn't have in any of his previous writings? Or is this just a larger regurgitation of what we already have, a whole lot of wishful thinkin?

I think you'll find that most Mormons who are familiar with the issues disagree with Dr. Sorenson's work. The Amazon sales ranks of Meldrum's stuff vastly exceeds Dr. Sorenson's work.

Ah, that's why they hate him and accuse Meldrum of priestcraft. It's missionary work when we do it for money, its priestcraft for different views than we espouse to make money at it

I heard a joke about the new temple recommend question, "Do you believe in ONE Hill Comorah?" Sorenson and his BYU friends might not appreciate the humor.
