Porn addiction meetings

Post by _beastie »

A relative recently shared his ward's bulletin for a reason unconnected to the topic, and on the back of the bulletin, under announcements, was a notice for pornography addiction meetings Sunday evenings, with a support group for spouses.

WTF????

Have any of you heard of this?? I can't even imagine a group of LDS (men) sitting around, sharing details of their porn addictions. And do they share background information, like "my wife and I haven't had sex for seven years"????

It's just strange.

In Phoenix area many ward bulletins contain information on porn addiction meetings which follow LDS developed 12 step program. So porn is alive in this part off the world.

I'm just having a hard time imagining how this works.

Most addiction meetings are meant to be at least somewhat-anonymous. Meeting with other members of your ward to talk about your addiction is the exact opposite of anonymous. Are they sharing details? Do these men (and I'm sure it's all men) sit around and listen to one another's tales of masturbation?

Yep. The Mormon church mirrored the AA model and infused their particular ism into it. It covers all forms of addiction, including pornography addiction.

Here's the problem with that. Addiction is considered a disease since if it's left untreated it'll eventually lead to death.

Someone please explain to me how watching pornography is a terminal illness....

We speak of the god of diminishing gaps. Well, there aren't many dark places in need of a devil left either.

The hypothesis you refer to as God, though not disprovable by logic alone, is unnecessary for the following reason.
If you assume that the universe can be quote explained unquote as the creation of an entity known as God, he must obviously be of a higher degree of organisation than his product. Thus you have more than doubled the size of the original problem, and have taken the first step on a diverging infinite regress. William of Ockham pointed out as recently as your fourteenth century that entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily. I cannot therefore understand why this debate continues.

nothing was said by 'starglider' about devil; stupid device...

If it's based on 12 step, it won't really work anyway. The evidence about 12 step being ineffective is strong.
