The Salt Lake Astronomical Society has announced its opening of the Kolob Observatory at the Stansbury Park Observatory Complex. A 70" amateur telescope, constructed from a spy satellite mirror by Utah resident Mike Clements, will occupy the observatory.
Who named the observatory? An anonymous donor purchased the naming rights. There was a brief flurry of controversy within the society but the name stayed.
It will be interesting to see how amateur astronomers discuss Kolob and the Book of Abraham when they are asked about the name.
