The whole notion of a covenanted, chosen people seems to share the same roots of racism: feeling superior as a group to others.

Especially as the Nephites thought that Covenanted, Chosen people were denoted by a white skin.
A striking parallel to what people thought during Joseph Smiths era.

We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

Find me a successful religion whose adherents believe that God favor's some race other than the majority of the believers in that religion.

"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

Quite right. Religions are, in and of themselves, supremacist organisations. And they want the freedom to continue to practice their particular creed of supremacy.

In Joseph's Smith day many believed it had to be from God. They believed Cain was cursed with a black skin, and Indians was a hot topic of how they got to the America's after a world covering flood. Many speculated they were a lost tribe of Israel. Funny how their completely ignorant speculations were answered by the Book of Mormon in support of those speculations. Speculations today we know are very wrong. That's some good evidence the origins of the Book of Mormon are not ancient, but less then 200 years.

God didn't say or do anything. Humans said we shouldn't mix those with very active melanocytes with those with less active melanocytes. Those with with very good ultraviolet radiation protection should not mix with those who have to use FPS50. But in reality. God blessed those with dark skin with great ultraviolet radiation protection. Melanin in skin protects the layer that under goes mitosis. I've seen so many discussions about race and the Mormon priesthood and I've never seen anyone, especially Mormons discuss the anatomy and physiology of the body; why those from Africa have very good ultraviolet protection - dark skin.

Except that Peter's vision in connection with the visit from Cornelius taught that every person could become part of the covenant people, by exercising free will to do so. Regardless of race.

Unless you believe that an evolutionary process is a constant tool used by God on all planets that have sustained life.
What we refer to as races is the result of genetic variance in sequestered populations and favorable circumstances that allow for recessive genetic traits to thrive (pale skin).

Until Joseph or Brigham came around.
