Mormon church closing its genealogy center on Park City’s historic Main Street
The LDS Church’s Park City Family Tree Center, originally opened on that community’s historic Main Street for the 2002 Winter Olympics, is closing for good.

Church spokesman Daniel Woodruff said the facility’s last day of operations will be Wednesday.

“Those [in the Park City area] wishing to research their ancestry can continue to do so at the multiple family history centers in the Salt Lake City area,” he said in a news release.

Woodruff also announced changes to the operations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ visitors centers in London and New Zealand.

The building for the London Temple Visitors Centre has reopened but no longer serves as a dedicated information site for those curious about Mormonism.

“[It] is now open as a waiting area for nontemple patrons,” Woodruff said. “The Hyde Park Chapel Visitors Centre will continue to welcome guests in the London area.”

The New Zealand Temple and its adjacent visitors center will close in July for extensive renovations. Visitors instead will be encouraged to go to the new Church History Centre and Museum in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Woodruff said that in all three cases, the closure decisions were “made after considering the best use of the church’s resources as well as the needs and demands of each area.”

The London temple is probably an hour and a half drive outside of the city - properly in the leafy, quiet suburbs. I can't imagine anyone ever going to the visitors centre. Hell, the Hyde Park Visitors centre is probably on one of the busiest pedestrian streets in central London and nobody ever seems to be going in except for Mormons.

It means that church resources are dwindling and there is lack of interest in the facilities to keep them going.

The Church also announced opening some new missions, mostly in Africa, and consolidating even more established missions. That makes sense, for who needs a lagging Logan, Utah Mission when it could be blended into another for extra vitality and to save on needless administrative overhead.

This make me happy.

I just wish the missionaries would start coming by again.

Nothing like fresh missionary egos to slam....
