It does not appear Marissa was flown to the island by President Smartt.
So I'll just begin by talking about the plane flight there. I was on a "plane" of 8 passengers, it was super tiny, and I got to sit up front with the pilot! It was a little claustrophobic because all the controls were right in my face, but it was interesting to watch him fly the plane.

Monday (April 28th) night we get a call from President Smartt. He each talked with us individually over the phone. President Smartt will no longer be our mission president, because Sister Smartt is dying from MS. He was released and they were packing up to go back home.I was shocked...! President Cornish (1st councilor of Caribbean Area Pres) would be coming in the next morning to fill his spot until we get a new president. President Smartt then told us that we would be working in the office in the replacement of the Pattersons couple missionaries. There are no replacement for the senior couples because there is a shortage of them in the church...So, I was assigned to be the head executive secretary of the office. I'm the front desk who gets all the phone calls and emails from missionaries and people around the world. I do about everything. We would be trained over the next few days and...The senior couples leave on Tuesday the 6th of May...which is also transfers day. Can you say stress?
That night we just felt so down, depressed, scared, confused. It was just us 3 that knew, nobody else. How do we handle this? Where do we start? Ahhhh! A little bit later we call President back and we end up going to his house to talk in person. This is something that I will NEVER forget... I can't even describe the feelings we had when we shared in that home on that night. It was frightening and unreal that they were leaving, but we discussed some things better and ended on a light note with some good laughs actually. We ended with a super spiritual prayer and we all felt so...comforted. I really am going to miss the Smartt family. I really am.
I'm beginning to think that church officials may have offered Smartt a way out rather than face prosecution and open exposure in embarrassing the church for wrong doing that may have been in violation of Puerto Rico law. All he had to do was play along as if nothing happened and take the next flight just as soon as the church could make arrangements.
Smartt no doubt wanted to get out of Puerto Rico as fast as possible in order to reduce his chances of getting stuck facing legal entanglement as well as shouldering all kinds of extra expenses that would be foisted on him should the church dump him.
Marissa relates a strange dream in her 1/13/2014 letter.
Anyway, to kill the suspense, I'll tell you about the crazy dream I had. This past week, me and Hermana Archila were talking about how weird it would've been to be Mary, like, to find out you're pregnant but still being a virgin. But in my dream, I gave birth to twins and had NO idea how I'd conceived or anything like that. But I KNEW they were mine, and they were so cute! And I named them and everything, but I was scared to bring them home and show them to the family because Rachel and I had only been gone for a week at school and we went to the hospital and then I came home with two little bundles of joy! And I felt bad because Mom and Dad are still too young to be grandparents. And I was scared to bring them home just because I was nervous about what the ward members would say! Hahahaha. The dream was all in Spanish, too, so that was cool. But anyway, that's just one of the many MANY weird dreams I've had out here. :)

Just found Shulem's quote from 3/24/14 about the haircut.
This past week I cut President Smartt's hair and it was the first time in a year I'd used my clippers. But I'VE STILL GOT IT! He said he just wants me to cut his hair from now on! :) Hurray! :) I don't know how that'll happen when I'm on Tortola, but I'm sure he'll find a way to get there. But I feel like he's going to be a General Authority one day. He's super awesome and I hope you get to meet him!

It's starting to make sense to me now, I think.
Can you give a link to that one, Shulem? Sounds like somebody other than Marissa.

Madison54 wrote:I don't remember that a missionary was shot there! Do you have a link to any stories on that?
Just looked for a link, but can't find it now.
It was mentioned in a senior missionary blog relating to the circumstances surrounding Pratt's leaving and mentioning the bogus story they were fed about Smartt's wife's ill health.
