So long Boy Scouts

Post by _moksha »

Message from the Presidential Newsroom:

"Scouts may come and
Scouts may go and
We never change our point of view
But when you admit scouting girls
We dust our boots of you!"
-- May 8, 2018, Salt Lake City

At the bottom of this statement the words hot drinks that warm the belly were crossed out and the words "thanks for all the fish" were substituted. No further clarification was forthcoming.

And so long, Girl Scouts.

As someone who invested 18 years of her life in the Girl Scouts (combined girl and adult member years) this is incredibly disappointing and sad. I started going to Girl Scout meetings before I was old enough to join. It was a family tradition. I was Leaders Kid. Years later, I became a leader of two troops myself.

There was a reason that Baden-Powell formed the Girl Guides back in the 1900's and handed it off to his sister. There was a reason that Daisy Low brought the movement to Savannah.

And none of it had to do with mixed scouting experiences.

I don't know how BSA is planning to handle this. I don't know what GSUSA might do in response, if it will modify it's program or how. If GSUSA program needs changing, then it should have seen this coming and done it already.

I can't help but wonder what Juliette Gordon "Daisy" Low would think of this. I bet she would think that GSUSA had it's head so far up it's political butt that it failed to remain fully responsive to the preferences of girl members. And I further bet, that she would say so and not mince words.

Back in March of 1912, she made her historical announcement.

"I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight."

All of the Investiture ceremonies that I conducted began with that piece of history.

And start it she did. She started with 18 girls, the White Rose Patrol of Savannah, Georgia.

All of the Investiture ceremonies that I conducted included 18 white roses, to commemorate that piece of history, too.

And a traditional Girl Scout flag ceremony. Salute, and "rock back".

I wanted my girls to know that they were taking part in making American history. That they themselves were a part of American history. My troops were steeped in tradition and the girls were so proud to be part of their movement.

And now it seems that apparently somebody didn't keep their Promise.

GSUSA has failed to be everything it was ever intended to be when Daisy Low's life was turned around by an idea that she brought back home with her.

I never in my life imagined I would ever write a commentary like this.

On my honor.

Wow, I guess the Church really did give BSA the heave ho.

Why? The LDS church never sponsored the Girl Scouts.

GSUSA has failed to be everything it was ever intended to be when Daisy Low's life was turned around by an idea that she brought back home with her.

How? Nowhere did I read that they're going to start admitting boys.
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

Inbetween the two sentences you asked about, is a whole post that you seemed to have missed.

My thoughts and the reasons for them are contained therein. They have nothing to do with the LDS church.

Okay.

In that case, I'll bite: In what specific way(s) are the Girl Scouts different now than when you were involved?

In the UK, girls can join Scouts yet Girl Guides still remain an independent organisation. I think you're over worrying this. Also, I understood that the BSA was not necessarily introducing mixed gendered troops, but allowing girl troops to form.

I predict the replacement youth program created by the church will be a complete failure. I can easily see the cult institution creating a cookie cutter program void of diversity and cultural flexibility. Let them try try and push their white Utah cult on the rest of the world and watch it flop.

The white Mormon-cult leaders of Utah should shut their mouths and roll over and die. The world doesn't need them. The cult leaders are a total joke.

I think it’s just fine for the LDS Church to leave the BSA. What I fear is that they will replace it with some lame-o thing that’s mostly about cultivating the Holy Spirit, or, in other words, sobbing over insignificant coincidences and speaking in hushed tones.

Most of the youth leaders I know think the new 14-17 program put in place just isn't as robust as what the scouting program had to offer (even when accounting for LDS non-standard usage of the system). I think you're probably on to something with your fears.

I'm seeing a lot of excitement from the more liberal members with the full restructuring of the youth program coming in 2020. They seem to be thinking there will finally be an end to the lopsided programming, perhaps even some kind of joint venture. I predict that the result will be a program that still creates the same divides between male and female with continued emphasis on the gender roles the church believes is the proper order of things. Now the YM's program will just have close to as little support structure and network as the YW's... so I guess that is something.
