Familiars? That would be cool.

Presumably were the shooter to have drug and mental health issues, these would be fairly well known in the ward?

I think this tragedy (if its the result of mental illness/drug issues) also now puts pressure on the Church to better train local leaders for dealing with members who may not be mentally stable. At what point is a local leader qualified to understand that a member of the ward represents a significant threat to other members? And what should they then do about it?

Given that the police have charged the shooter with first degree murder suggests incapacity by mental illness or drugs are not factors in this shooting. Police have reason to believe it was premeditated and planned in advance.

Today's Deseret News version now says 120-140 people were in attendance at the ward, "according to estimates by witnesses." All other reports still say 50, including police and the AP report. Go figure.

About 90 people were attending the Sunday worship services, according to estimates by witnesses. Police interviewed at least 50 witnesses, Gehman said.

It’s now 90 people attending (which must include children) of which police interviewed 50.

In related coverage...

Several churches across the valley told 2News that security carrying guns inside their chapels is critical.
“We invite broken people to the church, we invite everyone to the Lord, and when you open your doors to everybody you sometimes get people you don’t expect,” said Jonathon Carillo, the ministry director at Calvary Salt Lake, who is in charge of security.
Carillo said Cavalry has three services every Sunday and sees about 900 people come through its doors. He says they have a full security team. They also have teachers and staff trained to go into full lock-down mode within seconds.
Our goal is that no one even knows that we are here, and if we have done that — if someone walks in and walks out and says, ‘That church has no security’, we’ve done our job," Carillo said.

How can security be a deterrent if nobody knows it exists?
What a bizarre statement.
