Mormon Discussions Disrupts Mormon Apologetics
Re: Mormon Discussions Disrupts Mormon Apologetics
Yeah......
the world is full of places to get hurt.
It's not that that's okay... it's not. It would be better if everybody treated each other well. But they don't: Mormons, ex-Mormons, never-Mormons.
So here we are.
Anyway, for a message board, this place is pretty decent even if it's horrifying. I've been thankful for freedom of speech and I feel like this board balances that freedom with common decency as well as can be realistically expected. More censorship and I would have been told that I was "harming the community" by not remaining silent -- as if it had been me who did the harm.
Besides, what's wrong with being a bitch? True, I don't call women bitches (aside from myself) because of the sexism associated with the word; I don't want to cause that kind of hurt in someone else. That said, I know a lot of bitchy men and sometimes I make sure they know I know it. Female dogs have class. When I'm calling a man a bitch, I'm complimenting him for being like a powerful woman at the same time I'm telling him to knock it off.

I don't think there's anything more wrong with that than calling someone a dick, asshole, mf'er, whatever. In fact, I've heard women using the b-word faaaaaaaaaar more than men. Way, waaaay more. I think attempting to control someone else's language is just an attempt to control that person. When someone submits to someone else's notion of decency it just make it that much easier to be manipulated. Just my two cents. :)

That's been my experience in life, too.
The logic usually goes like this:
"Rosebud told me to f off. That's proof she's a bad person. Since she's a bad person, obviously it's okay for me to treat her badly. Also, using the f word also proves she has no credibility... so whatever she reports about me doing to her before she told me to f off is false."
I like the f word. It's a nice word. I like to take the approach that it's far more important to learn how to not be susceptible to the power of social shame regarding using the f word than it is to not use the f word. I'd rather my daughters learn how to swear well, for example, than to be afraid of swearing. That way they'll be harder for other people to control in the future. I love them and that's what's good for them.
That said, part of knowing how to swear well is knowing when not to swear. Calling women bitches really is very socially insulting. The word has a long, negative history. When people use "bitch" against a woman in an insulting context, my opinion is that it's crossing a line that demonstrates something negative about the person who did the name calling.
It's not that nothing is wrong with what happened. It's that this is where we are. How could anyone possibly have the "psychic energy" to effectively balance all of the factors at play?

This board can be a fairly horrifying place for women. But if it weren't so horrifying, I'd never even have been allowed to speak up for myself, as a woman. A lot of efforts were put into silencing me.
Some women even treat me poorly here.
I don't think it's reasonable to have expectations that the major problems in Mormon culture will be effectively and consistently resolved to complete satisfaction on a message board.
The board records the people and the problems. Nobody is being forced to put herself in emotional danger by posting here. Some of us come here because this danger is less than other dangers.
My first reaction to your above is, "Huh?"
Do you think that any of my comments regarding the use of the word cunt are about my feeling in "emotional danger"?

Welp. Where I come from swearage is used at an entirely different level then you see posted here in tirades.
I get the feeling that those who post tirades filled with female or sexual slurs are trying their damndest to control the receiver. Wanting to make them retreat via intimidation so to speak.
That really doesn't work on me. I mentioned two instances where male posters used the word cunt on me. In both cases, I didn't report the offense. In both cases, I handled the situation right on the thread as I saw fit.

Of course not, you are the rough and tough Jersey Girl!
Re: Mormon Discussions Disrupts Mormon Apologetics
what?! So you think because it is horrifying to women, that's why you are "allowed" to speak? Did autocorrect do something here, because that makes no sense. This board can be a fairly horrifying place for women. But if it weren't so horrifying, I'd never even have been allowed to speak up for myself, as a woman. A lot of efforts were put into silencing me.

What do you mean by "treat me poorly"? And why the distinction between men and women? Again, what do you mean by this?

come on, rockslider, use your words! You mean:
"you are the 'venomous[ly] bitch[y]' and 'total[ly] cunt[y]' Jersey Girl!"
Right?
Nope, my question is where does Jersey Girl draw the line of which adjectives she holds pride in meeting and which she takes offense.
