The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day U Turns

Post by _I have a question »

I’m starting to lose track of the significant reversals the Church is making. Off the top of my head...
1. Plural Marriage.
2. Blacks and the Priesthood.
3. How the Book of Mormon was translated.
4. Who the ancestors of the Native Americans are.
5. Where the Hill Cumorah is.
6. The November 2015 policy on gays and their children.
7. Temple ordinances.
8. The source of the Book Of Abraham.

What have I missed?

We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

Word of Wisdom not being a commandment and then being a commandment

The Kinderhook plates were real until science proved them fake in the 1980s

Adam-God (this was short lived with just Brigham though)

Women could give blessings and then they couldn't

Women couldn't wear pants and now they can

Those are getting a bit petty though and not as doctrine-heavy.

You had to be 12 to get the Priesthood, now you can receive it at age 11.

Whether or not it’s better to die protecting your virtue rather than allow yourself to be raped.
BYU’s policy of punishing students who fall victim to rapists.
The teaching that masturbation causes homosexuality.
That homosexuality is a choice.

A big one you don't hear much about is the office of the Presiding Patriarch. The office is equal in power to the prophet, which is why it is no longer filled, they were/are afraid of their inability to control whomever is in that office.

The SLC branch of what Joseph Smith created has retreated to a point where all that is important is we have a prophet and a book. We do what ever the former says and use the latter as a defense for doing it.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

I don't know that it is a reversal but what counts as revelation seems to have changed. Joseph Smith would riff off of Clarke's commentary or Swedenborg, etc. for his revelations. Now it is ordinary corporate scheduling and program decisions or legal briefs that become "revelation."
"Religion is about providing human community in the guise of solving problems that don’t exist or failing to solve problems that do and seeking to reconcile these contradictions and conceal the failures in bogus explanations otherwise known as theology." - Kishkumen
