The Utah case

The Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said Petersen recruited more than 40 pregnant women from the Marshall Islands over the past three years and transported them to Utah, where they were paid to give up their children for adoption in the U.S.

"The commercialization of children is illegal, and the commoditization of children is simply evil," he said.

Petersen is facing 11 felony charges in Utah related to human smuggling.

A leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says he is "disgusted" by an Arizona elected official and church member accused of running an adoption scheme.

Elder Ronald Rasband, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, told The Arizona Republic the church leadership has found the human smuggling charges against Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen "sickening."

It's the first time an official with the church has weighed in on Petersen's case. The Quorum is the highest governing body after the president.

Elder Rasband says they will also review Petersen's membership.

Elder Rasband issued a strong rebuke of this baby trafficking and mentioned possible disciplinary actions by the Church for this Maricopa Assessor. I am glad the Church has spoken against such human trafficking.
