2 science societies removed BYU job posts over honour code

Post by _I have a question »

Two internationally recognized science societies have removed Brigham Young University job postings from their websites after their members raised concerns about the religious Utah school’s LGBTQ policies — which ban “homosexual behavior” among students and faculty.

The American Geophysical Union in Washington, D.C., and the Geological Society of America in Colorado pulled the ads early last month. The earth science groups have said the requirement listed in the job postings that those hired must adhere to BYU’s Honor Code was “inconsistent” with their ethical standards.

“AGU has always encouraged and fostered a diverse geoscience community throughout its history because we believe — and repeatedly see — that diversity and inclusion are essential to advancing science,” Billy Williams, the union’s vice president of ethics, diversity and inclusion, wrote in a public statement. “Since the job posting from BYU referenced its Honor Code as a requirement of employment, which conflicts with our policy, we removed the job posting from our website.”

Several members of both the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society of America — nonprofits that focus on earth, atmospheric and space science — called out the ads and the school for being anti-LGBTQ. They believe the wording amounts to discrimination.

The ostracising of BYU in the 1970’s brought about the ending of the racist Priesthood and temple bans. Let’s hope that history repeats itself...
“When we are confronted with evidence that challenges our deeply held beliefs we are more likely to reframe the evidence than we are to alter our beliefs. We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

Now if Social Conscience Businesses would stop Leasing from the Mormon Corporation until they removed there hateful polices against the LGBTQ community.

Just think how quickly Mormon man god and his son Mormon Bastard jebus would accept and embrace all people of all beliefs and lifestyles if everyone of their Commercial buildings were suddenly empty because business like Macy's, Goldman Sachs, Apple, etc. enforced their tolerance policy's and terminated there leases because of the Mormon corporation's hate policy.

Isn't posting on those so-called "science sites" just a formal but unnecessary nicety? I've understood BYU likes to hire in-house, although they will consider Latter-Day Saints with outside training who are willing to adhere to Provo ways. Hiring from the outside could promote dangerous and unwanted diversity. Even if hiring by BYU regulations is limited to Mormons with a Temple recommend, they would not be happy with a maverick who thinks differently. They want a rock-solid Republican who obeys orders.

Over time, having their job postings banned from mainstream scientific journals is certain to diminish the value of a BYU degree in the STEM subjects, both in terms of public perception outside Utah, and eventually in reality as well.

I am as much disappointed with these two science societies as I am the anti-gay Christian bakers that won't sell wedding cakes for gay weddings.

The baker bakes to make money. If someone doesn't want to pay the baker the amount of money the baker asks, then of course the baker doesn't have to sell the cake. But if a gay customer is willing to pay full amount, what's the baker's problem? Sell the damn cake, pocket the cash--it's the purpose of the bakery.

Similarly, the science societies' purpose is to promote science, jobs within science, etc. If an applicant doesn't want to live under BYU's dis-honor code, there are other listed jobs he or she can apply for. There are no doubt other science-degreed applicants that would not be bothered by that code, but would not know of the job because these societies have pulled the job listings. If BYU didn't really have science openings, but expected those hired to teach young earth, anti-evolution notions, and the postings were some kind of a ruse, then sure, the societies ought to pull the listings.

Granted, the baker scenario helps widen the chasm and deepen the discrimination, where the purpose of the societies is not to facilitate a school that itself does so, but if we'd just let go of the extraneous and focus on the cake-for-money, and the postings for science positions, then straight v LGBTQ would start to become irrelevant.
