Then who is going to take the John Jacques Chair of Sacred Geometry and Chess?

What part about "take 3 chairs" are people not understanding?

A chair for each corner of an equilateral triangle! How could I have been so dense? I blame TG overeating.

By the way, did I ever get that chair at Cassius Dr. Scratch was saying was open? I have no idea if I just join or if I have to legally be named in... I have no idea how to proceed. And I am more than willing to chair a place in the noble university!

I believe it’s customary to wait until the music stops...

Indeed.

As an aside, I'm glad you took up the new avatar. There is something comforting about constantly seeing Deerlohim and Deerhova when reading your comments. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you, Exiled! And I hope you and yours have enjoyed a happy Thanksgiving.

Indeed.

Agreed. And reviewing the year’s issues while seeing them in total shows some interesting patterns.

Thank you, Doctor Scratch, for another fascinating top 10!

With regard to point 10 the dust ought to have settled by now. John Gee is listed in the BYU College of Humanities online faculty directory as a full Professor, and the William "Bill" Gay Research Professor, in the department of Asian and Near-Eastern Languages. His office is just down the hall from Daniel Peterson's. It's impossible to find Gee through the ANEL department website but this doesn't necessarily mean anything because the ANEL department website is a typically useless university department website. It looks nice but shows none of the information that anyone actually wants.

The brief note from the Maxwell Institute about Gee's transfer to ANEL states that he is retaining his rank and the Gay chair. It also rather oddly goes out of its way to mention that the Gay endowment which funds Gee's chair remains with the MI. I don't see that this changes the fact that Gee has kept his Gay chair; I think it just means that when Gee retires the MI will get to appoint his successor and that meanwhile the MI gets to use whatever income remains from the Gay endowment after paying Gee's salary.

This last point, however, might mean that the Gay chair used to have research funding attached to it, which Gee could use to pay grad student stipends or hire assistants, and that Gee has now lost this nice extra funding. Sometimes the amount of funding that is attached in that way to a professorship can be substantial, particularly in older German universities. I know a guy who can pay four post-docs out of his permanent funding before even touching his grant money. If the Gay endowment was generous to that kind of degree then it would make more sense for the MI to mention that it has kept these significant resources, and it would be fair to describe the move as a big loss for Gee. On the other hand the extra funding above salary might be just a token sum for conference travel and the MI might just be mentioning it out of petty bitterness.

I for one am happy that a John Gee has found a proper academic home, where he hopefully will focus on Egyptology, which is his area of expertise.

Have a gander at his cv:https://humanities.byu.edu/wp-content/uploads/CV-Gee-May-2019.pdf

You should be able to find something interesting in there that isn’t directly related to Mormonism.
