Apologetics in Salt Lake Tribune
Apparently, when God cursed the Lamanites with a dark skin, he cursed them with a dark animal skin! Doh! How silly of us to think God would curse the Lamanites actual skin. He cursed them with bad (dark?) tastes in clothing.
Somebody at the Salt Lake Trubune must have a sense of humor to allow this desperate apologetics to be published.

Re: Apologetics in Salt Lake Tribune
I do, I do, I do, do, do, do, hope that apologists adopt the "What if ‘skin’ doesn’t mean human skin?", apologetic argument. What a foolish idea and so easy to destroy.

Take the bait!

Perhaps she had goth kids in mind and then applied the concept to the skin of blackness language? Or maybe the 3 nephites inspired goth kids to let us know how god curses his children?

I believe that God uses dark clothing to show the righteous who to avoid.

"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

Remember how last time you saw a pretty woman wear a dark dress, she was unattractive and not "enticing" at all?
Yeah, me neither. If God uses dark clothing to make people not "enticing," he's an idiot and lacks basic understanding of, well, anything really.
These are some entertainingly desperate apologetics!

Not to mention that it wouldn't be the color of the clothing they were wearing that would be repulsive as you point out, it would be the fact they were wearing animal skins of what ever color was available.

The Book of Mormon teaches that women dressed in black are not enticing? What kind of paddy-cake, taffy-pulled nonsense is that?
Kiss me, baby! Make love to me and ravish me, you handsome Nephite man!

Re: Apologetics in Salt Lake Tribune
At one meeting a father and mother and their sixteen-year-old daughter were present, the little member girl-sixteen sitting between the dark father and mother, and it was evident she was several shades lighter than her parents on the same reservation, in the same Hogan, subject to the same sun and wind and weather. There was the doctor in a Utah city who for two years had had an Indian boy in his home who stated that he was some shades lighter than the younger brother just coming into the program from the reservation. These young members of the Church are changing to whiteness and delightsomeness. One white elder jokingly said that he and his companion were donating blood regularly to the hospital in the hope that the process might be accelerated.
Spencer W. Kimball
Oh, he is talking about their clothing. Thanks for that clarification.
Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

Re: Apologetics in Salt Lake Tribune
I think I look pretty damn good in the black leather jacket I'm wearing right now.
The argument in the article is that "skin of blackness" could really mean anything. I guess that's true. We don't know for sure if the author of the Book of Mormon subscribed to the theory that words were meant to convey actual meaning. It's really hard to engage with an argument that straightforward phrases with obvious meaning could mean anything.
Maybe "skin of blackness" actually means "chicken sandwich" or maybe it means "space shuttle."
Once you introduce the possibility that words don't have their obvious meaning who knows, really, what they truly mean?
