On another thread Mormonicious posted one of the exit stories. Agree with "church history ruined it for me and everyone I know" even though that's not how it happened for me. Had I not found my own way out, I'm sure church history would have blown it. Unfortunately for the apologists, and for Givens who thinks the Book of Mormon is so complex and demanding as a literary text, however you wish to re-invent the idea of 'truth' and history, a Church that built itself upon member testimonies that precisely affirm the utter truth of the founding event has no option but to fall on its own sword when the founding event is shown to be starkly different from the testimony version.
To the member who said that had the Church been more honest they would have stuck with it: I disagree. Had the Church been honest about its past, the Mormon "testimony" couldn't possibly exist, at least without substantial revision, and it's unsure whether a body of members with revised testimonies would have had the same level of belief and commitment.
