Funnily enough it was a faithful Mormon who got me hooked on coffee. We were conducting night ops and we were at the ‘jump TOC (tactical operations center)’, and it had coffee and hot water for tea and cocoa. I was going to make a cocoa before moving out, and I watched him dump a cocoa packet in a coffee. I was like, “Whoa, dude, what are you doing?” I was amused, not judgmental, but he justified it that it’s better to be awake while driving over rough terrain and to repent later than be dead. I was like, “That’s pretty sound logic” so I tried it, and the rest is history - I have a coffee brewing right now, in fact.

My Seminary teacher was right. It is a slippery slope.
I was ensnared by the demon brew by the combination of 7:00 am class and a cart with free coffee at the entrance to the lecture hall. That Satan is a clever SOB.

Or purchase from sustainable sourced, fair trade, ethical sellers. Kind of like where I imagine you must buy your shoes, clothes, and mobile phones, I’m sure.

I see that you completely ignored toon’s second sentence. What’s your reaction to it?

Heaven forbid we help out or give our business to someone in a developing economy. It doesn’t take much to look into the likelihood that it’s ethically sourced.

Same here (almost). Late night in a Hampton Inn lobby in the dead of winter in Kentucky working on a document for Fort Knox due the next morning. Same 24 hr. coffee service available. The Army officer working with me was not LDS. However, he strongly suggested that the next few hours would be a lot more productive if we were both properly caffeinated.

When I hesitated he said to mask the bitter taste with a package of cocoa mix, add sugar and creamer to taste, and I would be fine. I did so, more than once in the next few hours in fact, and felt better when we were finally done at zero dark thirty than when we started.

That said, there are good quality and widely accepted prospective epidemiologic studies showing that study cohorts reporting moderate coffee and or tea consumption have a longer lifespan and better neurological health in later life, as compared to cohorts that do not consume either beverage.

As with several other aspects of LDS doctrine, when it comes to consumption of coffee and tea, restrictions in the WoW work to the detriment of faithful members.
