Members in Europe told to not question the Prophet or Apostles for 30 days

Post by IHAQ »

Addressing the topics of truth and prophets, Sister Nelson testified that prophets of God always speak the truth.

“One of the distinctive features of the Savior’s Restored Church is the presence of prophets,” she said, adding that prophets are called by the Lord to do difficult things.

“The Lord speaks to His prophets, instructing them what to say and do that will bless and protect all of God’s children,” she said. “Therefore, as we choose to follow the prophets, we will be blessed spiritually and temporally.”

Media, social and otherwise, is filled to overflowing with beliefs that are contrary to the teaching of prophets, she added.

“So, how can we protect ourselves amid the war of words that rages all around us?” she said.” I suggest we compare anything and everything we read, view or hear with the teachings of the prophets.”

She invited the congregation to shift their focus for 30 days.

“What would happen to your level of peace, clarity of thinking, joy, experience of love and spiritual prosperity if, for 30 days, you started to question everything the world’s media, and all other sources, offer you — and — instead, prayerfully studied, fully embraced, and lived by every prophetic teaching you could find. What would happen in only 30 days if you chose to follow the prophets with exactness?”

It’s a 30 day blind faith fest. It’s “turn your brain off and just do as you’re told”. Where would humanity be if people didn’t question their leaders? Where would the Church be? The Priesthood ban would still be in place, electro shock therapy for gay members would still be a thing. The finances would still be hidden. Etc etc etc. It’s as if Wendy knows their words and instructions won’t stand up to the scrutiny of members thinking for themselves about what they’re being told…

What if the prophets (and Wendy) tested everything the prophets have ever taught, compared them to philosophers, skeptics, science, and the actual scriptures in full, along with the teachings of the East as well for 30 days. Not in an artificial way, but really got down to it and compared, viewed and read deeply? The street she commends is a two way street. Why this incessant thinking of stopping thinking just to follow along with what someone else says and does? I truly find that so very odd.

She’s effectively saying that in the past members were wrong to question the Priesthood Ban, yet here we are today with the Church disavowing it and all the things Prophets and Apostles said about it. I’m sorry but Prophets and Apostles don’t have a track record that suggests they can be trusted to just be followed unquestioningly. Not even the current ones! “We’re not a wealthy people…” springs to mind.

Most interesting for me was this part:
if, for 30 days, you started to question everything the world’s media, and all other sources, offer you — and — instead, prayerfully studied, fully embraced, and lived by every prophetic teaching you could find. What would happen in only 30 days if you chose to follow the prophets with exactness?
Out in the world, there is a long list of unspecified falsehoods. Instead of believing those things, why not focus on the long list of unspecified truths taught by prophets, and follow those truths with exactness?

How on earth are you supposed to follow a bunch of things you aren't sure about in terms to present-day status with exactness? That's what leads people to Denver.

The Church's primary meme that "the Church is true" has had nearly unstoppable momentum during my lifetime. Don't fret the details "it's true". You know that really crazy guy who left and smokes and drinks and gets with women all the time? Yeah, he knows it's true, he just can't live it. In fact, even that guy might very well admit that in fact he does know its true. What exactly does he know is true? Might not be so sure about that. Hell, if the wife of the living prophet can't come up with an example of what's true, why should he need to?

But that momentum has been fading. People want something tangible. Politics and social media is providing what old Rusty can't. Her message is a failed one right out of the gate. I don't think her problem is with members with their brains turned on who care about science, her and Rusty's problem is the members with their brains turned off, but putting their faith in right-wing politics instead of Rusty.

Wendy wants us all to close are eyes, click the heels of our shoes and say three times, "there's no place like the 50's, there's no place like the 50's, there's no place like the 50's." Do it, and maybe it will seem like the reruns of Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best are new episodes.
"I'm not crazy about reality, but it's still the only place to get a decent meal." Groucho Marx
"The truth has no defense against a fool determined to believe a lie." Mark Twain
The best lack all conviction, while the worst//Are full of passionate intensity." Yeats

A woman tried that in the evangelical world. Turns out, literally applying all the ideas is really dumb. Who could have imagined? https://www.amazon.com/Year-Biblical-Wo ... 1595553673

It would be even more contradictory in Mormonism given how many things its leaders changed their minds on over the centuries.

What might Dr King have thought of Wendy’s counsel?

What was the purpose of this trip to Europe? Was it a trip or virtual?
