What I love most about Mormonism - the spirit of adventure in their origins.

I have thought about the friends I had along the way, the youth stuff that was great, and our volumes of family history that have been professionally assembled. Lots of stuff. But nothing, nothing, nothing stands out to me like being from a line of people that took off into the frontier and went west. That spirit of working, building, risk and guts, even with the BS and the fake as hell and nearly mythical stories that came with it, makes me happy.
I love that way of thinking about Mormonism.
I learned a lot from George Smith. I don't know if you ever met him or read his stuff or read anything from Signature. His wife, Camilla, stayed faithful/active or loyal or whatever you call it even after the S*storm with Packer. She too is great. I really enjoyed her and would catch up with her in my home fairly regularly. At the time, I was still active in the Church. I thought about them a lot after leaving. I obviously had a burn it down type of approach to things, but dang, that family was a great example of how to do it better.

George Smith got rocked by BK Packer. Absolutely rocked. But he never stopped loving Mormonism. Not ever. And not just because Signature was his business.

Since I’m one of the only Mormons that post here I thought I would start a thread and talk about why I love Mormons and Mormonism. [deleted] So I thought you guys would like to know more about me!! Mormonism has given me so much happiness in my life! I really enjoy having a Mormon community to rely on when I need help. Brothers and sisters willing to help you do just about anything for just a can of postum and a plastic bag of Girl Scout cookies. My kids have learned so much from going to church and interacting with their Mormon friends. My wife and I are so happy our children were able to grow up around people who follow Christ. Ok!! More to come later!! Feel free to join in and tell your wonderful and exciting stories about Mormonism!! I’ll have more great stories coming later!

Comments in the OP designed to bait other posters are not about Mormonism. -cp-
and I will try to get to a post to tell you what I loved about Mormonism, still love about it and how regardless of whether or not I believe it anymore, how I have benefited from it.
Cool

Glad it works for you. Maybe spend more time rubbing shoulders will your Mormon friends and less time here. That would surely prove your point.

Being a Mormon, I would feel more comfortable if AtlanticMike and Binger were made to wear Hannibal Lecter masks while posting at Discuss Mormonism. Better safe than sorry.

Given that my wife was raised in the church and I'm a pretty firm believer that disrupting things in your past would likely dramatically impact who you are as a person, I'm thankful for Mormonism for helping shape the amazing woman in my life. The early years of our marriage were also forged in that fire and even if a lot of it was in subversion to the LDS church, I can't help but recognize the role it played in that.

For helping shape the love of my life, playing part in our formative years and giving us a common bonding experience upon our exit I say "Thank you Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" and also "good riddance".

I know of George mostly through friends and family who know George. Thank you for sharing this further insight with me. My dad's spouse knew him I think fairly well, but she is more conventionally LDS is many ways and saw him as something of a rascal, I think.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling on this, Atlanticmike. I am eager to see what you add to this thread over time, and I hope others will add things that they love about Mormonism and Mormons. I am with you. There is a lot to love about Mormonism and Mormons. Just because I choose not to affiliate with the LDS Church anymore does not mean I don't love Mormonism and Mormons. There is so much about both that is really cool and interesting. I think this is a great idea for a thread.
Growing up in the church we always see the church as a religion because it is obviously. But what is Mormonism? I say it’s a life road map that’s clearly marked out and tells you exactly what direction to go, where to make pit stops, and puts up warnings signs if there’s going to be complications on the journey. Some people need “maps” to get through life calmly and effortlessly. Some people don’t . Some people enjoy filling the tank up with gas and just driving to see what’s out there in the world. Is one way better than the other?

About a year before I made a clean break from the Church I was living in New Orleans. I belonged to the Harahan branch, which was struggling.

We got a call from the stake president who informed us that we needed to get the Elders Quorum, such as it was, to be at a certain apartment complex at 9:00 A.M. the next Saturday to help a family unload their U-Haul truck. He had received a call from a young husband and father who told him he and his family were moving to the area, and wanted to know which unit of the New Orleans stake was the weakest so he could find a place to live in that unit's boundaries and help it out. The stake president suggested he find a place in Harahan. The young father dutifully did so, and then told the stake president the date and time he'd be moving in.

Including the missionaries, about six of us showed up at the apartment complex at 9:00 A.M. The manager of the complex came out and asked us what we were doing there. We said we were there to help somebody move into their new apartment. The manager said, "Oh, you must be Mormons."

The family showed up about 15 minutes later with about three very young kids, and we helped them unload the van. Moving to this area, they immediately had a group of people who would be their friends. They knew they would worship with these people, socialize with them, be friends with them, and do service projects with them. They knew we'd be there to help them out, even before we met for the first time.

That family and mine have both moved away from New Orleans, and it wasn't long after that that the Harahan branch was permanently shut down. But I still keep in touch with them. Great people.

Ah, the Harahan Branch. Good good good times. Good good good people. The New Orleans Branch was carved out of the ward that had a chapel out by Lake Pontchartrain or something, way out there. It may have been a Canal Street address. We met for a while at the new chapel by the big cemetery in Metairie, the one that Katrina destroyed, and then we met at the Jewish Community Center and had some of our meetings on the campus of Tulane University. The stake could not get the chapel funded for a lot they had purchased right on St. Charles Avenue. We were sorta tired of meeting at the JCC and at Tulane. We finally jumped through a lot of hoops, and with some insight and tricks that my mission president taught me, we got that church funded and built the one that did survive Katrina and is still being used.

Those were some damn cool people down there in NOLA. Really good people and really good food and really good times.

I was the ward mission leader there when Haiti went to hell, one of many times, and the missionaries were moved to US missions. We ended up with 3 of them in NOLA. They were absolutely crazy. Nuts. They were going to Saints games and getting on TV and dating girls from Tulane and going to Mardi Gras and having a blast. Funniest dudes ever. After their mission, one of these dudes made a bet on the super bowl with is buddy. The loser had to join the Army or Marines. He lost, and joined the damn Army. We were sad and worried. He is now a Federal Judge. Go figure.
