Mormon Easter

Post by drumdude »

Having grown up catholic, I was quite surprised to see the lack of change in the church during Easter. For the most part, it seemed like just another week. Catholicism of course has an entire Lenten season, plus an entire Holy Week leading up to Easter itself. Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, etc.

Was I missing anything? Do Mormons treat Easter as basically just another Sunday?

Mormons are mostly about the egg hunt and the secular Easter tradition (A good thing in my opinion). However, depending on how sensitive one is to apologetics, Easter is a time to exaggerate the point that Mormons worship Christ, not Joseph Smith. Over at SeN, you'll find all kinds of over-the-top articles pretending that Jesus is where it's at, and desperately selling the point made in silence, only for a brief few hours, that there are no current thoughts about Joseph Smith. But these articles are, at last, are predictable. Note what you said about all of the preparation for the event of events in Catholicism. All the Easter articles at a certain outlet probably took less time to put together than a single "dinner with friends" outing at a 3-star restaurant.

You might not have the traditional Easter week beginning with Palm Sunday, but there are traditional events that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (formerly known as Mormons, before they went undercover) celebrate:

Interpreter Friday - A tradition since 2013
City Creek Mall Saturday - Let's go shopping 1-2-3
2 hr. Sunday Service - It used to be 3 hrs. Jesus will be talked about this particular Sunday.

School children in Utah may be threatened with discipline if they do not wash off that ash on their foreheads on Wednesday.

Did Dave Bednar celebrate Jesus’s birthday on April 6th this year?
May each of us do and become better through the Savior’s Atonement. Today is April 6. We know by revelation that today is the actual and accurate date of the Savior’s birth. April 6 also is the day on which The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized.

Yeah well, there's not much joke to make about showing up to Church for Easter and Christmas for Mormons. If ya go at all, you go all the time. So there is that. But, you're right, Mormons don't make much noise about Easter. "we're having a egg hunt at the Church on the Saturday before". Somebody usually references Luke at least once on Easter Sunday. What more does that needy fellow want? Catholics have been given him Easter praise for centuries.

Unless you happen to have been or are in the wards I’ve been in.

How much noise will you be making this Sunday about the resurrection of Christ and the meaning that has for the world at large?

Methinks that it will be a lot less than what will happen in LDS wards across the world.

But how would you know?😕

I find it interesting that twice a year, the LDS church goes all out with a huge expensive production - the MoTab choir sings vigorously, the cameras are streaming high definition video, the red carpet is rolled out and the church gives it it's all... to glorify the leaders of the corporation in big red chairs.

What happens on Easter and Christmas? The Bishop assigns Sister Hatch a 10 minute topic that lightly touches on Christ and mainly is a regurgitation of one of the men in the red chair's talks. Most of the congregation falls asleep as they remember the talk verbatim from General Conference a month earlier.

Happy Easter, Mormons! ZZzzzzzzzz
