Related thread for what it's worth. I hope this reporter digs all the way to the bottom of this story.

WTF that's about as disturbing as it gets.

#1 reason I kept my kids away from the LDS Church: their continuing abject failure at protecting kids from abusers. It is completely unconscionable. I don't see how anyone, knowing the problem, sends them one thin dime of tithing or offerings. The whole thing is absolutely disgusting.

I don't know how the Kirton McConkie lawyers can live with themselves with the advice they give to too many bishops and stake presidents. Covering up abuse simply cannot be tolerated. Shame on you and I hope your conscience gets the better of you and makes you suffer like the girl in the above article. Is the possibility of the GA prize worth it?

In one form or another Paul Douglas Adams got some of what he deserved, the death penalty. Many others are in dire need of this penalty.

I agree. Reading a quote like this from a lawyer makes me nauseated:
William Maledon, an Arizona attorney representing the bishops and the church in a lawsuit filed by three of the Adams’ six children, told the AP last month that the bishops were not required to report the abuse.

“These bishops did nothing wrong. They didn’t violate the law, and therefore they can’t be held liable,” he said. Maledon referred to the suit as “a money grab.”
They did nothing wrong -- they just allowed a girl to suffer sexual abuse for years.

Sad thing is that I know at least one of the lawyers over there. He was a good kid growing up, from a good family. I was sad to have read one of the internal documents where he appeared as one of the lawyers on the other end of the cover-up hotline, giving advice to support the reputation of the church first and willingly sacrificing the victims. Shame, shame, shame.

Hiding behind “followed the letter of the law” will not save them with this issue. People will just leave if a higher standard and root cause problem solving aren’t evident in policy and practice. Not only is that not the case, but it seems to me that the conspiratorial cover up is a real crime.

One instance of non reported abuse in the church, maybe letter of the law is justifiable defense. But hundreds, thousands? How many NDAs are out there? Worse, how many victims said nothing because they knew the system would not help?

It all starts to look like criminal conspiracy to thwart justice in the service of looking good. It is horrendous to think such an organization pretends to be led by Jesus.

by the way from the other thread, #ChurchToo, I added the following. Maybe both threads should be merged.

Some time ago I heard what I thought was a credible story that the church has paid out some $4 billion in hush settlements to quietly dispose of abuse cases. That is a huge number. It sounds less a stretch when you read the AP story, however. If hundreds of cases have been referred to authorities, how many thousands were not?

This is the same Globe reporter who broke the huge Catholic abuse story, winning him the 2003 Pulitzer. I hope he digs all the way to the bottom of this one.

This thread has forced me to sport a frowny face the rest of today. Its' not that I haven't heard this sh|t before, but the reminder hits me.

I'm pissed imagining these church leaders think they have the best course of action and the result is the worst. One story like this should melt them to their knees and fix their absolutely stupid defensive pose. I'm feeling so mad I don't even want to think about all the other stupid things about the Church. This alone causes me such anxiety for all those family and friends unwittingly or for the sake of God supporting the Church....I think i'm going to be yelling the f-word at everyone I see today.
