A lot of Mormons are claiming the AP article is a fraud, and makes up the idea that the hotline number is a way to cover up abuse.

Like much of the rest of Mormonism, the specifics of how the church runs their hotline number is hidden from public scrutiny. We know for a fact that KM is involved and we also know for a fact that there is no blanket policy in place that reports every abuse to the police.
This is why Peterson won't give us anything other than gaslighting bs. Too many members fit into the projectionist headlines he used recently: https://www.patheos.com/blogs/danpeters ... rance.html

The problem is that projection works.

I'd have to see him thread up a 35mm film before I call him a true projectionist.

Haha, maybe "psychological projectionist" would be the better term?

A second response from the Newsroom. Predictably defiant and unapologetic. Oddly, still leaves out the pertinent fact that the bishop in AZ could have reported. Technically did follow the law, but also would have been within the law to report, but for advice or church counsel not to report.

The bishop wasn’t told by the helpline to report the abuse. Full stop. Because of this, the abuse continued for 6 more years. This was the direct consequence of the church’s policy to not disclose when they have the legal right and moral obligation to.

The Mormon church can easily put in place a policy to report all cases of abuse to the police, and they still defiantly choose not to.

Note number 3:

The Church's abuse help line has everything to do with protecting children and has nothing to do with cover-up. It has been in existence for more than a quarter of a century. Its purpose is to:
<snipped>
3. To directly report the abuse to authorities, regardless of legal exemptions from reporting requirements, when it is known that a child is in imminent danger. The help line routinely reports cases of child abuse to authorities. Outside experts who are aware of the Helpline have regularly praised it.
But then the very next sentence contradicts number 3:
Even when a report is not required or is even prohibited by law (because the confession is “owned” by the confessor), the help line encourages leaders to pursue ways to ensure these three goals are met.

So does the helpline “directly report…regardless of exemptions”?

Or does it “encourage leaders to pursue ways…”?

Especially in this case. It’s ludicrous to think that a bishop who was also a family medicine doctor didn’t know the children in that household were in ongoing “imminent danger.”

And this downplaying of the incident is disgusting:
In late 2011, Paul Adams made a limited confession to his bishop about a single past incident of abuse of one child.

They are making this so much worse. Just apologize and commit to do better. Not going to end well if they keep up this charade of insistence they were somehow a “gold standard.” Unlike questions of historicity, claims about abuse safety are demonstrably false.
