This is not an actual principle in Mormonism.
As a 16 year old, how did my best friend know that my dad had his temple recommend taken away because he didn’t believe in the historicity of the Book of Mormon. He knew this long before I did (his dad was in the bishopric).
As a missionary, why did my mission president tell me that a few of my companions were breaking the law of chastity?
As a ward clerk in my early 20s, why was I privy to the sexual activity of other ward members.
As a counselor in a bishopric, why was I privy to marital strife of members of my ward when that information was surely given only to the bishop in confidence? Why did I, once again, know the sexual activity/pornography use of ward members as a counselor in the bishopric when that information was also given directly to the bishop in confidence?
When I was vulnerable with my elders quorum president and bishop about not being able to carry out the duties of ward mission leader anymore, why was my name discussed in ward council to see if I could be talked back into it, and how did this information make it to a random woman in the ward with no connection to ward council (she brought it up to my wife in a brief conversation)?
And just recently I was open and honest and said I needed to step away for a time and wouldn’t you know it now the missionaries call me.
Priest-penitent privilege doesn’t actually exist in day to day Mormonism. It’s just a convenient excuse for not reporting SA.

The bishops were asked about his excommunication during trial, it’s not clear if the police had heard about his excommunication from ward members or just from the bishops. If the family really was weird and didn’t have many friends in the ward then the bishop may not have told anyone.
