Duke Player Was Barraged With Racial Slurs And Threats Of Harm The Entire Game Against BYU

When your scriptures and doctrine are steeped in racism, don’t be shocked if that racism is reflected in many of your followers.

During the Duke - BYU volleyball game yesterday, a BYU fan yelled out racist slurs every time the Duke volleyball player touched the ball. The fan also threatened the player with physical harm.

More shocking, this fan was in the BYU section and nobody did anything the entire game. Nobody told the fan to stop.

Sad. It’s like BYU is still living in the 1950’s in many respects.

Salt Lake Tribune sport’s writer Gordon Monson weighs in:

What a pathetic episode at a school that already has more than a few issues with which to deal, issues to correct, issues to make right. BYU is not the only place such miserable happenings occur, but it should be a place, like any other, where they not only are not tolerated, but are dealt with at once, without delay.

I am glad the subsequent Duke vs Rider game was changed to a venue where that unacceptable behavior could be controlled and prohibited. BYU would have been right on it had it involved gays, but otherwise, they probably thought of it as a freedom of expression issue.

“Why wasn’t the fan removed? After the notification was made to officials and the coaching staff was made aware, why wasn’t something done then?” Marvin Richardson said in an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune. “That would be my question. I’ve attend university basketball games at Duke, and when something got out of hand, Coach K picked up the mic and said, ‘Hey knock it off.’ Why didn’t that happen here?”

“I don’t know why you would ask a police officer to stand on the floor unless there is a fear that something is going on that shouldn’t be happening,” he continued. “I believe that was the case.”

I heard BYU officials immediately called the new Kirton McConkie racial slur hotline once they found out what was going on. They were advised to wait until BYU won the match before doing anything. Volleyball is big with the brethren and each victory is precious.

And they had the police officer stand at Duke's bench, If I recall correctly. Why there, and not next to the stands where the slurs were coming from? i suppose protection was the idea, but it could also give the impression byu thought Duke was the problem, not their fans.
