This reads as a credible report. I don’t believe, from what I’ve read and seen, that the kid in yellow yelled or uttered racial slurs. As a reminder there were black BYU basketball players in and around the ROC section and thus far none of them have offered up supporting testimony of racial slurs being yelled. Multiple people were discreetly embedded in and around the ROC section, and nothing was noted.

by the way, I’ve been in that field house before, and if someone were screaming the n-word there’s simply no way they wouldn’t be heard and wouldn’t be identified. Perhaps 5,000 people seems like a lot, but that’s a tight little venue and literally hundreds of people would’ve witnessed a racist heckler, uh, heckling. There’s just no way those little BYU snitches wouldn’t jump at the chance to prove they’re super not racist and point out or post about how things went down. No way.

I’m leaning toward Rachel Richardson mishearing something, or perhaps just feeling overwhelmed by the tight quarters (having kids scream at you when they’re inches away would fray most people’s nerves, I’m sure), told her teammates who immediately believed her and supported her (as any decent people would, especially in a hostile sporting arena), and then it just snowballed from there.

Clearly not open-and-shut as it came through on day 1.

Maybe she actually just heard something in all the screaming and echoes. Maybe the sinister act was more subtle than second-hand accounts made it out to be.

Conceivably, a sneaky fan could have cupped their mouth, aimed at Richardson and projected a "Grrr" sound, with the intent to convey exactly what was heard.

Either of those two explanations might not be knowable. Both offer the same opportunity for people to come together and heal old wounds.

I would like to think this serves as a prompting for Nelson to be the first church president ever to formally apologize for the church's history of institutionalized racism. Because until/unless that happens, there will always be factions in Mormonism who fundamentally believe dark skin signifies a curse from God.

Her ‘godmother’ played a big part in creating something out of nothing. Rachel may have fed into that.

We can always do better at loving all of our brothers and sisters. That message has consistently been taught over the pulpit now for years.

If they’re guilty of anything it may have been admitting ‘white guilt’ just a little bit too fast.

Using immaturity as the reasoning behind "racist behaviors" and saying "barbaric things" seems out of place to me. They do affirm though that it is present enough to be noticeable.
