Binger, I don't know you well, but I wouldn't have imagined I'd see you defending John, for some reason. I like it. He needs defending from some of us, particularly when we're not being fair. He's just a guy doing his thing. hopefully we can all appreciate that and leave him be, in the end. (He still has, by far, the most punchable face in all of Mormondom)
Not sure I would say I was defending John Dehlin. Maybe I am. I didn't feel like I was.

For all I know, the dude is as pleasant as the first time I met him and as unpleasant and as far off the rails as he appeared to be at his peak when he launched the community groups and churchish stuff. He may be mellow as hell now and just running a podcast business that thrives on donations. There is damn sure not enough public information about him or his business to support the conclusions people make. That is all I am saying.

I doubt John would return my calls or emails today and I doubt he gives two craps about what anyone on this board says or thinks - except for Shulem and Philo, of course. And maybe AtlanticMike. Probably John cares about that guy.

Among the Narcissist Checklist, here are some defining traits that usually indicate you are dealing with a narcissist:
Being self-enamored, self-absorbed
A strong need for control
Demonstrating low levels of empathy
An attitude of entitlement
Chronically mismanaged anger
Manipulative or exploitive behavior
Feeling superiority over others
Living in an alternate reality
Being pathologically defensive.

I don't know if someone would have to fit all of these categories at once or if this is anywhere near a useful checklist. I would hate for someone to see how/if they can check this list off for John...but I'm sure some people might feel inclined. I tuned him out too long ago to really know...and my memory isn't sufficient enough to be reliable. And once you kinda see someone as too full of themselves it's probably too hard to see past the bias--squint enough at someone and they too might fit the list if you're prone to see them that way.
I can name specific examples of John's behavior as it relates to each item above. Many of them multiple examples.

But I'm just one person. Consig, for example, thinks he's the bees knees and never did anything wrong so YMMV.

I don’t know about volunteers, but it is my understanding Mormon Stories employees do get paid, including Carah, Gerardo, Jenn and some others you never see on screen.

I know a guy that has a refrigeration business in Utah. Employee turnover is higher this year than it has been in quite a while. I told a guy at Peet's Coffee that the owner is a narcissist.

Maybe the owner is just running a business but I am entitled to my opinions man.

Yes, but James all the examples you might give could be interpreted differently than others who may be familiar with them, and then these same examples may not show he fits the list. This is the problem with all of us lay people out there making accusations of narcissism it seems to me. But I can't stop anyone from doing it.

And you see, Consig may have a ton of other experiences with the man that shows he may not fit the list. I just don't think we're showing enough qualifications here to be throwing it out there. And maybe it doesn't matter because its all about whatever the communicator is trying to say. In other words, I may be trying too hard to control things here, as a narcissist would.

Anyway, certainly appreciate your contributions. I seem to recall you worked with him for at least a short stint (or maybe longer) so that means something.

James indicated earlier on the tax forms, which I'm too lazy to follow up on, that all the other employees split 5 grand in 2020. That doesn't seem like fair pay, particularly when he's making the kind of money James reported. I'd probably categorize anyone making that little on a project over the course of the year, as either one who didn't do much, or is basically a volunteer.

I know. I'm trying too hard on that narcissist thing. I just feel bad when names get tossed around and am too apt to pretend everyone is nicer than they are.

James Patterson is mistaken.

As usual.

Fewf! That's a relief.
