BYU lost a football game and Mormons were demeaned

Governor of Utah, Spencer Cox, who I believe is Mormon, made a tweet condemning religious bigotry that was "alive and celebrated" at the college football game on Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Oregon.

Some amount of students chanted "F___ the Mormons" a few times at the game. The U of Oregon responded:
The University of Oregon sincerely apologizes for an offensive and disgraceful chant coming from the student section during yesterday’s game against Brigham Young University,” the university stated.

“These types of actions go against everything the university stands for, and it goes against the spirit of competition.

“We can and will do better as a campus community that has no place for hate, bias or bigotry.
And the Oregon Pit Crew responds:
To all [BYU football] fans in attendance at today’s game we would like to apologize for the actions of the students in attendance. We do not condone any hateful speech directed towards one’s religion and are ashamed of those who participated.
To be fair since I've seen a number of members get upset about it and comparing the two. Last month (?) a Duke Volleyball player alleged someone from the crowd clearly said the N-word each time she served. No evidence was found to corroborate her story. But she was hailed as a hero and the story prompted many public condemnations by many various people. Also, it appears, BYU handled the situation much better than Oregon has. Maybe?

BYU players arrived on the field carrying an "O" flag with the name and number of a deceased Oregon player. They played the game. They lost the game. They will move on.

It is unlikely that anyone on the field and few in the stands heard the BS from the Oregon fans that were screaming about Mormons. The drama is mostly social media drama and not much more. The fans should be banned from future games and lose their scholarships if they are students. The University has do enough to not step into the social media farce and still deal with the events.

Comparing this to the Jussie Smollet orchestrated, Duke Volleyball orchestrated, media orchestrated, and South Carolina Women's Basketball orchestrated hoaxes is ridiculous but funny nonetheless.

The differences are simple. In the case of the hoaxes, there were victims without a crime. In the case of what happened in the stands in Oregon, there is an offense without a victim because nobody gives even a fraction of a crap what these idiots are doing.

Plenty of evidence. Clearly it happened and clearly it made it onto social media.

It was a small group.

Fair points. Looks like Oregon could have some pretty solid material here to figure out who might have done it, if they wanted to do something about it.

I honestly feel we get too worked up over stupid things people say. I wouldn't care if anyone got suspended or lost their scholarship. Hopefully, just for fan decorum, something like this doesn't happen anymore.

I like sports games. I don't like it when fans get all upset or lose the spirit of sportsmanship.

The UW Huskies have been in same conference as the Ducks since forever. Sometime in the past couple of decades, a portion of Duck fans turned pretty nasty. I don’t have any idea how it got started.

I thought BYU was pretty classy in the way it honored the deceased Oregon player. And the segment of classless Duck fans lived up to its well-earned reputation.

I don’t think there is any excuse for this, and I don’t understand why Oregon allows it to continue.

Are we certain they were not chanting FAIRMormons, FAIRMormons? Was it in reference to the blueness of their loin cloths?

BYU teams should not be harassed for their religious beliefs. Oregon should send the team a huge platter of cookies.
"The University of Oregon sincerely apologizes for an offensive and disgraceful chant coming from the student section during yesterday’s game against Brigham Young University," a statement from the university read. "These types of actions go against everything the university stands for, and it goes against the spirit of competition. "To all @BYUfootball fans in attendance at today's game we would like to apologize for the actions of the students in attendance," added the Oregon Pit Crew, the student section, in a statement on Twitter. "We do not condone or support any hateful speech directed towards one’s religion and are ashamed of those who participated."

Also, to mirror the arguments some Mormons made, are we sure these weren't Mormons pretending to be Oregon students in a false-flag attack?
